I dont even understand how this movie is so good at scaring me, I used to go camping alot and Ive been lost in the woods before so maybe that lends to the fear
>>
like that, The Shining, The Thing and Pet Sematary. And the Thing and Pet Sematary were only scary because of my age. The only horror movies i've seen that I feel would genuinely scare me if I watched them today are The Shining and TBWP and i've seen a metric fuck tonne of horror movies. Too old man. shit aint scary once you realise you're gonna die alone.

The last ones were Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, which I watched in high school

earlier than that:

>The Exorcist
>Halloween (John Carpenter)
>Signs
>The Sixth Sense
>

21 now, it's a lot harder to find things that really stick with me so I've kind of given up on caring about horror movies as a whole

watched a ton back when I was into them though

actually it's dark right now and I'm kind of spooping myself out recalling all of these movies

I grew up in a very big, very old house

things like the staircase scene hit me hard, it's a legit nuanced scary movie

I guess Signs wasn't that bad, more of the part where the alien shows up on the news channel and some of the field scenes are just a little spooky

also the surprise ending of Carrie out of nowhere, I was 12 years old and huddled up next to my tv alone in the dark and just about shit my pants

For me it's how good the back story is explored without revealing too much. Good story telling really builds up tension and complements the second half of the movie. This scene is a good example:

the sheer terror of the nuclear strike and the dread leading up to it (not as if '80s england wasn't horrifying enough!)

then there's like a long epilogue of how people cope and survive in a proper post-apocalyptic society - none of that mad max shit, just utter hopelessness as what's left of humanity reverses back to the middle ages; toiling, stealing and killing under the giant soot cloud that darkens the earth. a big nothing

it really fucked me up

Antichrist is disturbing. Watch it alone with the lights off of course, probably my favorite horror along with The Shining and TBWP. The thing that makes scary movies scary is the ambiguity. Most movies show you a monster eventually, and you say, "oh". But when they don't tell you what it is, and keep it in your head, that's when it really becomes something worth being afraid of.

The night time scenes when they were hearing things were genuinely very unnerving to me though. Everyone has heard the tell-tale heavy snap of twigs as someone walks through the woods in the distance and being surrounded by it while lost in the middle of the night is terrifying. The scene with the baby noises was really unnerving to me, I've heard a lot of people say that if you hear an infant crying from the woods and there's nobody around it's a very bad omen and you should immediately leave. This movie is scary as hell to me but it's a shame that it's still tarnished in my mind from the dozens of parodies at the time of it's release.

World War Z zombies were shit when they were running. It might as well have been a disease that mutated people into Velociraptors since all they did was chase people down and bite them once.

The only good parts in that movie were the ones that didn't rely on speed, the lab-sneaking and trying to move quietly through the army base at night were good.

Basically, there are these two astronauts who just came back from a flight, one in hospital, the other visiting him. The visitor is freaking out because no one seems to remember a third astronaut, not even the hospital naut. The hospital naut reassures the visiting naut there was no other astronaut.
When he leaves, the hospital naut read through the papers, which now say he was the only naut, and all evidence of the visiting naut is gone, no one remembers him but the hospital naut. The hospital naut realises that he is also going to get poofed out of existence, freaks out and the episode ends with him disappearing
Dont know why, but it always freaked me the fuck out
>>
Well I don't know if this counts but when me and a couple friends went to see star wars they had the trailer for the 3d not cartoon jungle book come up. I don't know why but the movie seems incredibly dark and I didn't expect to get spooked so much, especially the whole snake bit.
I mean I haven't felt that kind of feeling since I was a little kid watching stuff like return of the living dead or house on the haunted hill. Biggest thing that bothers me the most is that scary movies or even games can't get that kind of reaction out of me. It's like the first ounce of crude nightmare fuel I've had in 10 years

I don't tend to watch films that go for scary anymore, just compelling or interesting (I think is the goal anyway).

I just don't find it scary for one reason or another. Got spooked like fuck by Halloween as a kid but that's about it. I sort of miss the feeling. Knowing I MUST keep watching to the end to know I'm safe from the monster.

A couple of years ago I remember seeing this odd video on youtube. I think I typed in "mentally disturbing" in the search bar, or something like that. Anyways, the video was pretty simple. All you could see was something that looked like white smoke, and you could hear muffled whispers. The odd thing is, everytime I watched it, I saw something different in the smoke. Like skulls, faces, hands etc. The video description was something like the uploader had been to an institution for mentally ill people, for reasons I can't remember, also he had a camera with him. One of the patients took the camera and apparently filmed himself, talking. The uploader of the video also mentioned that people reported seeing different images everytime they saw the video, weird shit. I can't find it anymore though.

That's why it's fucking shit.

"it's only scary if you can relate", what kind of writing is this? Its so boring and one dimensional. The human mind is powerful and the truest horror is probably our own self awareness. If a writer can't even elicit a natural fear response because he they were too focused on context, then they failed.

Because the actors were genuinely scared, read the trivia on IMBD. On point where they find out the one guy is one and they're running hearing his screams, one of the film crew is standing on a hill with a white robe and ski mask on, and you can see the girls reaction yelling 'WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT'. It was unscripted as was most of the movie.
