In ANH and ROTJ, the death star was central to the plot of the movie. It was fleshed out, it was introduced early on and had pacing to build it up to the climax.
In TFA, the starkiller basically just gets unveiled during the 3rd act and then they go to destroy it. No context. No build-up. They just drop it in at the end of the movie and then sirens go off. Felt like a literal final boss level from a video game more than a plot element of a movie.
