Just watched Taxi Driver (1976) for the first time, anyone know why he carve crosses into the top of his bullets? (pic related)
I think they did something similar in From Dawn Till Dusk, but that was to kill vampires, so does anyone know why he did this? Is it for show or does it somehow affect the bullet when shot?

See the grey part on top of the copper part? It is a semi jacketed soft point. Most probably a 38 spcl or 357 mag. The X was a way way to force bullet expansion and/or fragmentation. The idea is that by fragment ion on impact, multiple smaller wound channels would be created.
There are better ways to do this now, starting with hollow points and frangible rounds.

FMJ has the whole bullet jacketed by copper. A semi jacket or otherwise known as soft point has all but the nose jacketed leaving the tip as raw lead. this lets the round travel through the barrel with limited residue while also allowing raw lead to strike the target and mushroom.
