Shakespeare is totally different, because it has entered a cultural sphere where everyone knows the stories. Any given production is more about the actors and the interpretation rather than being "true to the original". Shakespeare's plays can be set in pretty much any time period because they are more about characterisation than plot points.
Harry Potter, by contrast, is very much a story driven by plot circumstance.
