Well I use Letterboxd to read couple of reviewers that aren't on current RYM.
I do agree that RYM is better in every other way, but its film community is pretty dead even with the open forums

I think pricing definitely has something to do with it. My local (a picturehouse, not in London) now charges £10 as the standard 2D price for a ticket. Even ignoring the standard overpriced concessions, that's too much to just go see something on a whim. At a fiver you could justify going to see whatever is on to kill a couple of hours, but at £10 a ticket you're going to want to actually only go when it's something you can be sure you'll enjoy.
Replies to the tweet also discussed the increasing show of mainstream movies at the independent cinemas (and looking at the listings for the last 2-3 weeks you were pretty much out of luck if you wanted to watch anything non-Star wars at my local, which only has 2 screens), and also the shift toward Netflix/TV show boxsets in the way people consume content, and also in media coverage of that content.
