its a beautiful, but simple movie
I expected more from the mother, or perhaps for the others to react more to her, as a lot of the emotion from her went nowhere. Longshots of gosling and visuals were overused at points where the audience was without suspense, wonder or empathy, making it predictable and possibly boring. I loved the movie but there's decent reasons to not like it.

Refn is more interested in style than substance, but with Drive he was forced to moderate his style, which led to something pretty good. Not the same with Only God Forgives.

The whole point of the movie is that Julian wants to fuck his mum because he has oedipus complex. To fuck one's mum can be representative of one's desire to come back into her womb, in a preexistent condition.
When Julian cut his mum's womb and put his hand (in the movie the hands are a very powerful fallic symbol) in it, he's actually enacting his fantasy.
