Why was this movie so shit? Care to list the ways?
>>
Main character was named Jean Valjean. Lazy hack writer.
>>
you have bad taste haha
>>
>>64406731
bad singing
>>
It was very unrealistic.
>>
All I've watched is the bread scene, is the rest of the motion picture worth watching?
>>
Most of the cast is shit except for the background characters who were largely plucked out of recent Les Mis stage productions anyway. If you're gonna make a musical, especially a sung-through musical, make sure your cast can sing.
>>
Whoever edited this damn movie should be fired.
>>
I like the barricade people and Eponine more then the main characters
>>
Because all movie adaptations of musicals suck.
>>
>>64407618
Eponine was always the best character.
>>
>>64407513
This, watching the actual musical and then watching this movie just makes me angry
>>
They use the counterstrike water noise for Javert's death

Hooper clearly wanted to make a brick adaptation but the musical was currently popular and much shorter, so he adapted the musical and shoved in random brick moments and added his own oscar bait song and then cast a bunch of people who can't sing and the entire thing was just a huge clusterfuck.
>>
>>64406731
They cared more about the technology of making the singing segments than the story itself

way too up close to the actors as a way to simulate drama/emotion/audience connection with screen characters without having the actual drama/emotion/audience connection with screen characters. it focuses on being up close to characters to the point that it sacrifices telling the story in an engrossing way. the entire movie is just fake emotion porn with bad singing.

>Little Shop of Horrors
>Rocky Horror
>Jesus Christ Superstar

Come on
>>
towards the end it looked like the revolotuonaries were going to win then out of nowhere they started to die one by one. They were the only charcters I liked and who could actually sing
>>
They cut the Les Amis songs to pieces despite the fact that Les Amis and Eponine were the only people who could carry both their characters and their characters' songs.
>>
>>64407750
>movie is only good if you ignore the main character

Sounds like a shit movie, famiglia

This. These characters were the only ones faithful to the books and whose songs I actually like. I hopeed that some of them would live but nope we get emotionless Cosette and Stephen hawking
>>
The supporting characters of the second part were the only good characters
>>
Hadley Fraser playing a random ass loudhailer was more impressive than Hugh Jackman as the main character.

Say what you want about Crowe but nothing he did in this movie was as bad as Jackman singing Bring Him Home like he was suffering from extreme constipation.
>>
People here shit on Hathaway for playing Oscar Bait: The Character but Fantine was the only character in the main cast who actually sounded consistently good. Not the best Fantine ever but sure as fuck way ahead of the other a-listers.
>>
>no FLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT

What's the fucking point
>>

The first half of the movie was pretty good.
>>

Both these clips depict the same scene from the same story. Both these clips depict a very important turning point in Valjean's life, when he chooses to give up his life of sin and be a better person.

In one film we have a tense scene where Valjean thinks he's going back to jail, but is let free from a random act of kindness, and he quietly contemplates what a horrible person he's been.

In the other film Valjean blubbers and cries and wildly paces about, and he rips up a CGI piece of paper and throws it into the CGI sky off of a CGI cliff while belting out a single note as loud as he can.

Which do you think is better?
>>
>>64407862
He's basically a walking manifestation of tragic youthful martyrdom, of course he died.
>>
>>64408374
Comparing straight brick adaptations to musical adaptations isn't fair because of the amount of depth that has been wrung out of the story for the musical in order to make it three hours long and still follow your typical musical formula and work onstage. This does show the fundamental issue in translating stage to screen, though. Movies allow for a shitload more subtlety but this movie treats it like a slightly larger scale stage production half the time.

It also doesn't help that Jackman isn't really the best Valjean.
>>
>>64408260
Are you fuckin kidding me?

The second part of the movie was better and only because of the Les Amis
>>

I made another thread about Les Mis I had no idea there was one already.
What a coincidence but whatever who's the best Javert and why is it Roger Allam?
>>
>>64406731

Why do tumblr gifs suck so bad? Do they have a youtube-to-gif converter in the site that blows ass?
>>
>>64408228
This.
>>
LES MIS GENERAL
WHEN?
>>
Because Tom Hooper is a hack try hard director who tries to imitate the likes of Kubrick without any reason. The King's Speech is full of Kubrick-esque shots that serve no purpose to the story or setting at all, they're just there.
Le Mis had completely no sense of scale or sweeping epicness, because literally every fucking shot is a tight close up on the actors, because apparently that makes it emotionally raw. Somehow the stage version has better direction and camerawork.

Jackman and Hathaway give it their all though.
>>
>>64408901
They have a smallass filesize limit so all of their gifs are tiny, have a small amount of frames as a result and are slowed down to compensate, and layers and layers of photoshop filters to keep the colors tame and the filesize down.
>>
>>64408982
It's a shame about all the tight close ups, too, because a lot of the sets looked really nice but we never got a really good look at any of them.
>>
do you hear the people sing~
>>
>>64408982
I like the shot right after Fantine's Arrest whith Javert standing in the snow. Also love how they added Javert confessing to Valjean.

Fantine's Arrest and Drink With Me got the worst treatment in the film. The ABC Café too , but that part has been ruined since the first english translation anyways,

The best change they made from the musical was adding the Bishop at the end.

DYHTPS was the only really good song and that's because the only dubiously casted A-lister was Redmayne and it was an ensemble song so it had very few awkward closeups.

>>64406731

Anne Hathaway was great.
Russell Crowe needs to throw himself off the bridge IRL
>>
>>64410679
Well yes but I mean it was better than the stage version.
And worse than most other movie adaptations of the brick.
>>
>>64410785
It was worse than the stage show and the film adaptations of the brick because it tried to be both at once and failed on both fronts.
>>
>>64410821
But anon It succeeded on both fronts..
>>
>>64410929
>brick scenes clumsily shoved in and translated poorly
>half the main cast can keep up with the extras in terms of vocal power and control

Feel free to believe what you want, anon. Even if it's wrong.
>>
>>64410929
They cut the everloving fuck out of the musical bits and in doing so also butchered the actual book bits, how is that a success?
>>
>>64411042
>>64411084
>>64410929
Have you guys watched other film adaptations? What's your favorite?
>>
>>64411164
I watched the French miniseries one where Valjean's relationship with Cosette is kinda creepy and Sister Simplice is a qt3.14. I remember liking the Eponine a hell of a lot more than her any of her stage counterparts.

My biggest fucking pet peeve is when Fantine isn't blond though. It's a small thing but it bothers me so much, especially when stage productions manage to get it right but the films don't give a fuck. Worst is when Cosette is blonde which seems to happen on stage all the time.
>>
>>64411358
This. The hair is important god dammit. Hugo describes the hair of every single character.
Javert without sideburns is the worst thing that can happen though.
