I've been working on a Blade Runner philosophy paper throughout the last days, and holy fuck, I had almost forgotten about how fucking amazing this move is. The city, the characters, the soundtrack, the drama, the reflections on personal identity... 10/10 movie. no less.

Which begs the question, how bad will Ridley Scott fuck it up in Blade Runner 2?

It's more of an expository paper than anything, not exactly going for an argumentative work. Just writing and developing on the philosophical problems featured in the film, mostly on the issue of personal identity. It's in Portuguese, by the way.

Where are you from, philbro?

Studied ethics, pol science and aesthestics in sweden. Done most of my studies on meta-ethics and problem of free will, mainly.

Shame you don't write it in English, would have loved to read it otherwise (if you were selling to send, but that is irrelevant now since I don't speak portugese :)).

>delusional for having an opinion that is substantiated by hundreds of academic works on the philosophy, psychology and sociology of Blade Runner

Sure, neo-noir might not be everyone's cup of tea, but there are some genuinely fascinating questions in it, even if you don't like the genre. I don't think there is any other science fiction movie that is seen as genuinely textbook for contemporary philosophy and philosophy of mind in universities.

Nah, I'm still a sophomore, my paper isn't nowhere on the level of quality required to be read internationally. This one in particular is beyond dun goofed, I gotta finish it fast and start another one and study for an Epistemology test, all until Monday. Maybe when I get a degree and aren't such a fuck up in my studies?

>>64403800
2001 for singularity, Inception and Persona for perceptive experience, but Blade Runner is the one we talk about the most. Not surprising too, considering how it compacts most of what we talked about during classes.
>>
>>64404212
Thank you.

Alot of my earlier papers were not intended for international audiences either, but when 95% of the philo material you read is in English, it is hard to find the same common expression and terms in Swedish. It was just easier for me to write in English from the get-go.

You should consider doing it if your English is good and your profs don't mind. Will help you prepare for your real papers later.

Just finished reading 2001 the book by Arthur C. Clarke. Kubrick's movie was actually better.
>>
>>64404493
I've considered doing that, actually. One of the modules will be entirely lectured in English, so I might as well do so for the final paper.

I read the book back in high school, the movie is indeed far better. Clarke seems far to obsessed with explaining everything, the surreal feeling Kubrick gave it works far better story-wise.
>>
>>64404908

Why did you choose to get into philosophy, by the way? Are you looking to follow an academic life in it, whether as a teacher or a researcher or writer or similar? I feel obliged to ask this because, while I really want to get a degree in philosophy and possibly a master if I get the time, my interests aren't all academic, I'm an aspiring director and what I really want is to substantiate my work with philosophy. Is this a bad idea?

>>64402496
>Gosling
In his defense, both Rick Deckard and "real human bean guy" in Drive are both seemingly bland one-dimensional characters who eventually have a strong internal conflict to them. Humans being depicted as mostly cold and ironically lacking humanity was an important statement in Blade Runner, Gosling seems like a fitting actor for those standards.

My aim is to be a researcher, doing ethics work mainly.

What you write makes sense. A shitload of lawyers for example have double degrees, starting out with philo and then choosing to go into law where the philo background helps alot.

There are other areas besides law however. But yes, if you do want to do something other than philo, you usually need to complement your philo studies with either real-life work or another degree.

And fuck it, you're young probably. Doesn't matter if you fuck up now. You got time. Do what you enjoy and want to do.

Can someone explain Blade Runner to me? I just don't get it.

Why are there replicants?
Why did they come to earth if there is no way to extend their life?
Why send someone to kill them if they're gonna die on their own anyway?

>>
>>64408533
>Why are there replicants?
They are created to do dangerous off-world labour.

>Why did they come to earth if there is no way to extend their life?
Same way humans try to extend their life when diagnosed with terminal disease; the lack of acceptance of their fate.

>Why send someone to kill them if they're gonna die on their own anyway?
Because, as we see in the film, when they arrive on Earth they can be problematic.

i never got what people saw in this movie, compared to other great scifi. maybe reading the book first ruined it for me because i didn't really find anything interesting in this movie that hadn't been made obvious by experiencing the story through the book first. it's pretty, at least
>>
I've been having a lot of trouble reconciling the fact that the man who brought us Blade Runner also brought us The Martian. It's depressing any way you slice it.
>>
>>64409341
Yeah I have a friend who's not really "into movies," but he's read a bunch of sci-fi, including Androids...Electric Sheep, so he just thought BR was OK. If you're exposed to those themes a lot before you see BR, the subject matter would probably not be as interesting.

I haven't read really any sci-fi and really enjoyed BR.
>>
>>64409341
Great visuals, great dialogue, great score, quality acting, iconic characters. We can argue the plot might be thin and the themes it addresses aren't explored as much to make it a truly 2deep4me film, but for over 30 years it is talked about, and studied and watched over and over again.
>>
>>64409513
Is Scott really as great as he is made out? Sure he's delivered some great films, bit his misses far outnumber his hits.

For me, his greats are: Blade Runner and Alien. His good films are KoH: DC, Black Rain, Black Hawk Down, The Duellists and Gladiator. Hannibal is a guilty pleasure of mine, I think it's very much underrated, but nothing else he has made is anywhere near these.

Alien and Blade Runner mean he will always be remembered. They aren't enough superlatives to heap on them, but after watching The Martian the idea that they were coincidentally great seems more valid, and it makes my heart hurt.

>>
>>64410378
He seems like he's comfortable just to be working and being on set given his regular output of almost a film per year. He can shoot a film, he just seems to have no eye for a decent script.
>>
>>64409798
He definitely sets himself apart for his attention to visual detail and the overall look of his films. The visual aspects are done excellently, and sometimes complement the themes and characterization very well.

In the films that aren't very good, it's usually because of flawed story, editing, and dialogue. Maybe he underestimates the importance of these aspects. He's a great artist for sure, but only sometimes a great director.
>>
The way I see it, there are two ways BR2 will go:

>1) Soft reboot. Repeats the original movie in a slightly different setting, using almost the exact same set-pieces, character tropes and plot twists as the original. Probably a bit more fast paced and heavier on CGI

>2) Goes fuck all and offers a VFX showdown, filled with action and tons of CGI and little to none of the content that made the original Blade Runner good

If it follows the trend set by Prometheus and The Force Awakens, Blade Runner 2 will most likely go by the first option, which is essentially the safest and most dull way any director can pick.

That's one of the major logical fallacies, and one of the first things I learned in Philosophy. What kind of shit community college do you go to? Must be REALLY shitty if you're doing it on a movie that's based on a book.

You're both arguing, but I'm going to defend you both.

Gosling has a bit of dimension beyond "pretty boy" but it's not much, but that's perfect for Blade Runner. Harrison Ford's Deckard isn't exactly layered; what you're looking for is a competent, moody, brooding, silent type who looks as if they can handle himself.

And that is entirely in Goslings wheelhouse, he cares about his projects and I think he'll actually do pretty well with it.
>>
>>64410388

I've been eyeing it to download, but I haven't pulled the tigger yet.

>>64411512

I'm hoping for a resurgence in practical effects, for as much CGI was in The Force Awakens there were a ton of practical effects. I'm hoping, at least for the appearance of semblance and continuity with the original that they go with practical and try their best to emulate.
