JJ had no idea how to make the two friends act around one another, so he had them share a weapon in one of his patented action scenes to convey their friendship.
After all that time Han and Chewie blasted their way through the galaxy and in this movie is the first time Han takes notice to the fire power of a bow caster? Why didn't he care in the previous movies? Why hasn't Anyone cared about bow casters but wookies? They are not meme weapons nor uncommon. They are just another weapon like any other in the SW universe.

Because JJ doesn't know how to write an interesting character for shit. Solo should have been a General that had lost his sense of adventure and had to get it back. Not some 70 year old who was right back where he started 35 years ago. JJ managed to take what was a cool character and turn him into a walking corpse with the mind of a teenager.
The most ironic thing about TFA awakens is it makes the OT completely pointless, nobody learned anything in any of the OT films anymore, Han went from being a male chauvinist smuggler with no cares and no self respect to a general who respected women and who believed in himself....back into a dick. There is a difference between a soap opera and an Epic. Fine they could have turned back to being asses, and you know what ? THAT would have made a really great story, because at least they changed. TFA would have been far more interesting had it been a story about the rise of Kulo and the collapse of the Skywalker and Solo families.
