>that scene where the troglodytes bash/cut the guy's dick while they hang him upside down naked

Holy shit I haven't cringed that hard at a scene of violence in a long-ass time, that was brutal. Other than that it was a great film though. Kurt Russel is based.
>>
>>64395824
They used to use that as a torture method. Hang the guy up by his ankles, and start sawing him from his groin towards their head. Keeps them from bleeding to death before you get a significant way through.

That scene did make my assneck cringe though.

I enjoyed this 10 times more than Hateful Eight, imo it is the superior film

also

>Hateful Eight budget: $40 millions
>Bone Tomahawk budget: $1.8 million

lol
>>
For once, /tv/ didn't lie, it was pretty good.

Also Patrick Wilson is severely underrated, I'm not saying he's greatest actor alive, but I enjoyed him in everything I watched.
>>
I started watching it expecting some b-movie goodness with them just killing troglodytes all the way through, instead I got some actually tense western-stuff with them trying to catch up etc.

I can't remember the last time I was so surprised by a movie.
>>
>>64396226
And thanks to that scene that opens the third act there is a lot of tension because the movie just said "fuck you" and you have no idea who's safe, or what is happening.

I also like that it doesn't have a happy ending, but its satisfying.
>>

I watched it only because Kurt Russel.
It was an okay watch. Wasnt as great as some anons are saying though.

I also got taken out of the movie by seeing that cop from fargo, and hanzee in it. Why do that.. fucking broke massive immersion.

the film spends a lot time building up tension and suspense and then delivers the most disturbing shit in the final act. it is horror, but it's not over-the-top horror, it's a slow-burn.

Yeah, The Descent is actually my favourite western.
>>
>>64397870
I wouldn't really call either of those westerns though. A period movie that plays itself straight that turns into a cannibal survival movie at the end.

I'm sure there are others, but recently? It felt like it would have been right as home as a genre/exploitation movie from the 70's or 80's.

There's a criminally low supply of Wendigo movies out there. It's the spookiest myth America has, and yet you've done fuck-all with it except Ravenous and some movies where they're ice-monsters or some shit, or just in the imagination.

Imagine a "western" with a lone trapper being pursued by a wendigo, with the way wendigos would always hide when you were looking being used to make sure you don't see too much of it throughout the movie. The panic of the trapper as he feels he's being followed heightening throughout the movie until it reaches a crescendo at the end. Break the tension periodically by having the trapper come across other trappers or injuns, thinking it must have been them who was following him etc.

Probably my favourite movie of the year, along with Knight of Cups.

I think act 2 could have been shorted by 10 minutes or so. I get they wanna build up the tension for the 3rd act, but the amount of desert walking was a bit gay.
>>
Also yes, fucking excellent performance by all actors. Impressed by Matthew Fox since I didn't think highly of him before. Russel and the rest I knew could act.
>>
>>64403986

I thought the first act could have been shortened instead of the second. Once it got into the second act I was fully invested, but the first act felt REALLY slow at some parts.

Hugh Glass survived worse

Got mauled by a bear, left for dead with nothing but a bear pelt to bury him under, broken leg, open wounds that were festering, he had to crawl back to the next town through the wilderness for 2 months.

Did you also hate Ravenous because it included 2 actors who appeared in Justified? I'm sorry but what you've said is just pathetic reasoning.

If you didn't enjoy the movie that's fine, it was a bit slow and went on maybe 20 minutes longer than it should but at least give proper criticism.

It was very much like the thing.
- Tense somewhat horror movie
- Kurt Russell (duh)
- Small group of men against an unknown enemy
- Isolated setting
- No over the top score
- Very intimate
- No CGI, but great special effects
- Gritty

I can't be the only one that felt it was similar to The Thing. Obviously not in exact plot, but in feel.
>>
>>64410081
Meh they had too few people to truly capture a "Thing" vibe in my opinion. To me The Thing was about a collective of men living together in harmony for years, then rapidly coming apart because of an unknown entity. Bone Tomahawk is 100% about the rescue mission. No one cares how these things "work".
>>
>>64410081
>It was very much like the thing.

No it wasn't. Maybe you should read Beowulf or watch The 13th Warrior

Not in an isolated area far from any other humans
No aliens
No humans being infected/copied
No sense of impending death from freezing, even though surviving the alien.

From the movies Promo material:

"the film bears resemblance to The 13th warrior, with cannibals attacking a small town, and a group of warriors going in pursuit. The 13th Warrior was in itself based on the classic tale of Beowulf and Grendel. "
>>
>>64410351

I specifically said feel and you just listed a bunch of plot facts.
>>
>>64410781
>I specifically said feel and you just listed a bunch of plot facts.

You listed plot facts as well.

And the movie had none of the desperation that The Thing had.

In The Thing, everyone knew they were going to die because they couldn't allow any chance of the creature to get out of Antarctica.

Bone Tomahawk wasn't like that. This was a rescue mission from a "warring tribe" with a chance of success and hope.

Just like 13th Warrior and Beowulf were.

Your comparison is incorrect.
>>
>>64410954

>We're talking about movies, not books.

Movies which were very clearly based off the books, as the promo material for Bone Tomahawk clearly states.

It was based off the book Beowulf and to an extent The 13th Warrior, not The Thing.

By your definition Overboard, Tombstone and Captain Ron are "like the thing" since it has Kurt Russell in it.

You fucking Pleb.
