I think movies are a pretty terrible medium for making something truly scary.
They're too structured.
They're meant to be commercially profitable so they (typically) have to aim at the broadest audience as they can.
It's hard to be scared knowing that you paid 7 dollars to sit in a comfy chair to watch something that was scheduled at X and has a runtime of Y.
The written word is better for horror.
