>Friday 2ND UPDATE, 11:42PM: Early Friday PM industry figures show Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens making as much as $35M today, raising its cume through 15 days to $687M. What does this mean? It means that Force Awakens bypassed the No. 2 and No. 3 all-time domestic grossing titles Titanic ($658.7M) and Jurassic World ($652.27M) in the same day. By end of Sunday, Force Awakens’ total will stand at $744.8M-$746M, just $14.5M-$15.7M short of Avatar‘s all-time domestic record of $760.5M. Should these figures hold up, this would put Force Awakens in a position to own the all-time crown by end of Monday. Worst case scenario – Tuesday.

If you look at Avatar's worldwide numbers, they're just insane

>175 million in France
>162 million in Germany
>171 million in Japan
>204 million in China (when the chinese movie market was only 35% in size of what it is 6 years later now)

TFA so far has 54 million in Germany and 47 million in France and they hype is already dying down there

Makes sense. I remember Avatar being a big movie when it first came out in the US, but not so unambiguously huge as its international numbers seem to suggest.

It certainly sets a precedent that will be tough to beat for worldwide box office performance.

Yo-Kai Watch didn't actually beat Star Wars in terms of hard numbers iirc, it just sold more tickets proportional to the number of theatres it was shown in. (Basically, more empty seats for TFA.) Not that that's any consolation for Star Wars fans.

Japs love their Yo-Kai Watch - can't fault them on that.

How long until China is regarded as 'domestic'?
>>
>>64388087
China is estimated to be the same size as the US Box Office by 2020, and twice its size by 2025, so probably somewhere in those 5 years I'd guess.
>>
>>64388039
everything's better than avatar
>>
>>64388062
There's no proportionality to it. Yo-Kai Watch beat TFA in tickets sales objectively, but the ticket prices for TFA were so inflated that TFA still managed to beat Yo-Kai in gross.

China will break away and be considered a separate market to overseas in the next 5 years. We'll be counting domestic, China and overseas grosses.

As a point of trivia, Avatar made over $1.8b overseas without China, a figure that is over double its nearest competitor, which is Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) with around $900m. Just goes to show how much China has propped up all the latest blockbusters with their $900m-$1b+ overseas grosses.

>>
>>64388065

Dont speak too soon, it looks like its going to surpass one billion domestic.

Even a heavily frontloaded film (jurassic world) had only made two thirds of its total domestic by this point in its run.

Seeing as it made 440 mil, and star wars has made 650. It is reasonable to assume star wars will make at least another 300 million domestically.

However, star wars is not slowing down as quickly as jurassic world (by this point in its run jurassic world was making 8 mil a day whereas star wars is still making 20-30 mil).

Thus it is reasonable to assume star wars will break one billion domestic and slightly more probably. Bringing it close to titanic's inflation adjusted domestic or perhaps exceeding it.
>>
>>64388267
>>However, star wars is not slowing down as quickly as jurassic world

You're completely forgetting to account for the fact that every single day in TFA's domestic run so far has been a holiday. That runs out on Monday, where it will drop HARD during weekdays.
>>
>>64388260
And still made more in that single day than any other film ever has on NYD
>>
>>64388264

TFA second weekend: 33.2% drop
Avatar second weekend: 6.9% gain

It's already begun. Domestic might stay strong for a while but international gross is going to drop like a stone
>>
>>64388331
It's actually doing worse than expected. Most people predicted a $100m+ third weekend but it's never going to hit that now.

$1b is definitely not a certainty at this point, especially considering we haven't seen the extent of its drop after this Sunday, which will be huge in any case.

The movie is about how the white man shouldn't try to police and control the entire goddamn cosmos, of course a lot of people here aren't going to like it.

The only funny thing is that Cameron made the trigger-happy bad guy actually sympathetic when you look at the supplementary materials and realize what's going on (they won't get any reinforcements for years, the troops are getting killed while the scientists try to reason and bargain with a species that has no incentive to reason and bargain.)
>>

In the US at least, it was an absurdly low amount of money- something like $25 million.

I have no real investment in the movie aside from seeing it and enjoying it for what it is, in spite of its many flaws. I guess I'm just happy to see it bringing in numbers so consistently. For a while, I was concerned it really would blow most of its box office gross on opening weekend.

If that happened, then it would spell the death knell of Star Wars as a cultural phenomenon and turn it into just another flick. I suppose that's what I was really concerned about. (Although I'm sure it will happen in the coming years regardless, with Disney at the helm.)

What, Titanic? I think most sensible people that follow box office numbers will tell you that Titanic's cinematic run was far more impressive than Avatar's even. In the end though, there's only one winner, and that's James Cameron.

Add in international market fees, domestic market fees, budgets, ect, and then we'll talk. Atr this point, TFA is still underwater. Use your brain, faggots.

TFA revived Star Wars. It's already breaking records two weeks after release and will stay in cinemas for months.

It's like people forgot that Avatar only made so much money because it was in cinemas for a year. Same with Titanic.

The difference is one of the series has a long lasting impact and cultural influence, the other doesn't.
And the real problem is: both are leftist bull crap propaganda made to appeal to hipsters, normies and SJWs so they give more money to big-movie-industry.

TFA so far only has a 1:1 ratio foreign to domestic, 600 million each.

SW became a cultural phenomenon in '77 after the first film. Avatar is simply remembered as a Pocahontas rip-off with lanklet smurfs. There's no real desire for a sequel, there's no expansion into other media, no impact in pop culture, nothing. Because no one cared about Jake Sully, or Neytiri, or Nerd Ripley, or Scarface. No one cared about Pandora or those faggoty big birds.

Do you think if you put TFA in theatres for 2 years it would magically become the highest-grossing film of all time? No, because it's a blockbuster movie that makes 90% of its gross in the first 4 or 5 weeks of its release, compared to Avatar which had only made 90% of its gross by the end of the 12th week, and Titanic which had only made 90% by the 25th week.

Yes, but only because of the opening weekend. It made less money than Avatar during its second weekend. It made less money than Avatar during its second week. Clearly you have no idea how the box office works if you dismiss the first derivative, how fast a movie is making its money, as "excuses".

Avatar was also yet to open in China at this point, so the fact that TFA hasn't either is completely irrelevant.

By the way, by the time TFA is released in China, Avatar will have surpassed its overseas total, BECAUSE Avatar has been outpacing TFA for the past week overseas, and will continue to do so for the rest of its theatrical run.
>>
>>64390104
>so overly general
Idea from 300 years ago: Noble Savage, evil white colonizer.

Progressiveness for it's own sake: The Force Awakens. Though it also applies to Avatar to a lesser degree.

I think you're just too stupid (specially considering your inability to capitalize your sentences) to read into it.
>b-but muh enjoyment factor
Fuck you, and fuck your enjoyent. You liking a shitty plot that uses gimmicky leftist shit as it's base and only sells based on other gimmicky shit (3D IS SO INNOVATIVE, STAR WARS IS SO GEEKY).
