Why did he sell the rights to HBO before finishing the books? That was probably the dumbest move he could possibly make in his career. The books kept him rich on their own.

http://grrm.livejournal.com/465247.html
>>
>>64384613
Are you kidding? Someone offers you a huge amount of money for the rights to an adaptation for TV, which is currently stagnating? They could have changed their mind at any time. You want that money you need to take it.

It's a mystery
>>
>>64384613
He stopped caring about the books years ago, I mean we all know he's at deaths door, why would he spend the last years of his life working on a dumb story about dragons and zombies?

Instead he's just been rolling in cash and telling his gullible fans "I'm totally gonna be finished year, for reals this time I swear!"
>>
He's 67 and fat as fuck. He's literally LITEARALLY one foot in the grave already.
>>
>>64384613
More like why did HBO buy the rights to this fat fuck's unfinished work when he's to smelly and lazy to finish them?

It's like Madhouse getting the rights to Hunter x Hunter when they knew Togashi was never going to fucking finish it.
>>
I think that he is genuinely surprised that he didn't kick the bucket yet. I am too. He doesn't plan on finishing the damn thing and probably didn't since 2010. Sadly the show turned out to be a "turn off your brain and look at the pretty colors between tits, asses, and guts" kind of show, so there's no hope for good closure.
>>
>>64384797
Togashi will have to deal with the yakuza if he doesn't release a chapter this year
>>
>>64384797
>More like why did HBO buy the rights to this fat fuck's unfinished work when he's to smelly and lazy to finish them?

Because they saw series potential and aren't too lazy to finish the story?

Paid off big time for them. He's the loser who has to watch someone else complete his life's work.
>>
>>64384613
He's old and can't be fucked with it.
>>
>>64384797
Hunter x Hunter prints money even without getting releases. That shit tops the sales chart for an entire year even if only one volume was released.
Guess what else does that?
>>
>>64384613
He did it in 2006. I bet not even the fat fuck thought he would be so lazy that he would realease only one more book in 10 fucking years.
>>
>>64384613

Only reason he hasn't finished the books yet is that he

>keeps gettng distracted by free holiday offers to Dubai.

Lazy fucker is a total sell out and doesn't care about the books. I'll put bets on that the writing will be worse than DnD's.
>>
>>64385147
I wonder what kind of sex they're offering him there that makes it so distracting.
>>
>>64384968
ah....you kids and your assumptions.

most people don't read. Most people however loves the little flicker box and the hand held gadgets. so years from now when all of us are either ancient or long since forgotten, people will probably have eye implants or eyes up display or minds eye displays by which to view Cersi being shagged by Jaime over their dead son's body.

A true creator wants to affect people long after He's gone to dust. Rejoice though because in time you youngin's will catch on to what's up, I guarantee you.

>For that to happen, my publishers told me, they would need the completed manuscript before the end of October. That seemed very do-able to me... in May.

I mean it's not bad as I thought it would be. He might release it any time this year which is still good. Fuck those jews for skipping all those plots to race the books. They're probably doing the happy merchant face as we speak. Now everyone in the world is going to be forced to watch their shit.

Martin should just give up and have books 6 and 7 be novelizations of the series.
>>
>>64385732
He thought he'll finish aDwD is 2006. His estimations aren't worth shit, a he proved in that very blog post. We are never getting Winds.
>>
It's become such a fucking joke at this point.

Why can't he just write the fucking books? It's not like he's being asked to run a marathon. He could knock out the rest of the series in 6 months if he just sat down and wrote instead of traveling everywhere to do interviews about what he's going to write

What? HBO doesn't give two shits since the shows is printing money. It's the publishing houses that should care now that the show is spoiling shit for everyone.
>>
Because after the third book his readers figured out that jon is rhaegars son and since then he is trying to find another ending.
>>
>>64384813
How do you even get closure on something so sprawling?

The white walkers need to be resolved. The Lannister and Stark families need resolution. Someone has to be on the throne in a somewhat stable geopolitical situation (or the metaphoric throne completely destroyed, starting a new era).
>>
>>64385831
He explains why in the blogpost.

Dumbass. If you had made it and finally had a chance to live the good life, you'd really slave away at your work? Or would you take the chance to enjoy yourself?
>>
>>64385852
Whoa, who's the girl in that pic? She's really cute.
>>
>>64385972
We were clearly getting there. Tyrion/Iron born/Dany plots were all merging, as were the North/Stannis/Wall plots. Dorne/Aegon/Dany/KL were clearly being set up to clash too. It might take more than two books, and a cheap shortcut or two (white walkers/wild fire killed everyone there), but it's hardly impossible.
>>
>>64384797
Madhouse did a great job and maybe they even got new people interested in the series. Maybe Martin wanted the same.

ultimately the only reason they decided to make a show based on unfinished material is due to the red wedding

if you watch any d&d interview from the first two seasons you'll immediately see they only care about the red wedding. they were so caught up in how 'shocking' it is that they didn't care how terrible the rest of the material was. they straight up say that their main goal was getting to the red wedding before the show got cancelled.

Who else thinks this drawn out series has a better chance of being finish in book form than Berserk?
>>
That fat ass better get serious about the books, with the show set to end sometime in 2017/2018, people are gonna care less and less about him and he'll get fewer and fewer invitations to shit. A lot of the attention that he so desperately craves and so clearly loves, is gonna dry up.

it certainly does. Berserk is just too far away from the conclusion and one chapter every god knows when (he's back to irregular releases) is clearly not enough to probably even reach flowerstorm king, let alone a confrontation with griffith.
>>
He will die before finishing the series, you people know that, who would finish for him? Or it would be forever unfinished?
>>
>>64387630
Hard to say. The lifestyle of a mangaka is obviously a thousand times more stressful than that of a lazy writer who writes 2 books every decade, but GRRM is really fat and old... Either way it wouldn't surprise me if either of them died in the next 10 or so years.
>>
>>64387753
he said he doesn't want anyone to continue the books for him. According to that, the series should end with the show. In reality, it's pretty much a given the editors will give the books to someone else
>>
>>64386351
They had a lot more content than they used. The writers and showrunners cut out a fuck load of shit to streamline the show, for the worse in many regards. Just look at Robb Stark vs Tywin Lannister, the books go into great detail explaining what each army is doing, where they are, why they're doing it etc. In the show, everything was omitted because 'it's not important!'. They spent all of series 2 talking about how fucking overpowered the Lannisters were and how the Starks were guaranteed to win, and then they just completely gloss over it in series 3 and don't even attempt to explain why Robb hasn't just run in and fucked the Lannisters up. It was literally explained away by "oh he's probably fighting some other battle off screen".
>>

Absolutely this. Funny how Ned's death is the reason the show became so fiercely popular, but the lack of Ned is also the reason the show dipped in quality. It'll be out before the end of summer

the publishers only needed like two months for publication, which is insane.

I have a feeling they were editing translating, and writing all at the same time

all of a sudden we got reports of translators being told to set aside time

he's right on time for another July release
>>
>>64388278
I'm not ready for when /got/ will be allowed to exist anew. I'll enjoy this peaceful period while I can.
>>
>>64388251
he could retire if he wants, but he's the one saying he's going to finish it. so people expect him to do that.
>>
There's a couple things I can't remember from the tv show

How does bran get through the wall?

And is it ever shown that dragon glass doesn't kill wights but kills others?
>>
>>64388209
Yeah, and to credit the TV show they also pulled that shit off really well. I knew it was coming and it still blew me away. The highlight of both the books and the show, shame there are so few other decent characters to fall back on.
>>
>>64388184
At least Tolkien finished his shit and didn't have to see the travesty that the adaptation of his books were (basing this on Christopher Tolkien's own opinion and how well he knew his father)
>>
>>64388354

That's the point, anon.

Tolkien was an accomplished writer, a veteran, a family father and loving husband.
GRRM is the American version of that.
>>
>>64388350
George better not fuck up with Davos, Victarion and Jaime. I'm relying on them for then next book if we ever get it.

Also my secret dream is that he'd give more space to Loras' brother, Garlan. That man is bro as fuck and a legitimately interesting character. But of course he's never going to do that, can't wait for more Daenerys chapters.

The saddest thing is that hes admitteed theorists[some] have guessed how it all plays out. Seems like hes just trying to flip the script at this point and that explains the delay.
>>
>>64388454

>Sam finds a secret passage

Are you stupid? Coldhands takes him there. He tells him everything. Sam didn't find shit; he and Gilly would've been dead if Coldhands hadn't saved them.
>>

You're not doing it right when I literally said "basing this on Christopher Tolkien's own opinion"
>>
>>64384659

he was offered more money by hollywood studios for the rights for years and years but always said no because they wanted to "condense" the books into 2 hour flicks.
>>
>>64388487
he even talked about an ebig plot twist he thought up on the spot that would completely turn the series around, something that would set it apart from the show completely and that strangely enough fits with everything (or so he says)

he's clearly trying to fuck theorists in the butt
>>
>>64388492
he asked from the tv show, coldhands doesn't exist in there
>>
The reason he can't finish is because he doesn't know what he's doing. The series was only supposed to be 3 books and that is painfully obvious because after A Storm of Swords the story turns into a clusterfuck. You could tell he just kept expanding on more and more material like the Ironborn and Dorne because he probably thought, "oh shit, forgot about these guys, have to include them somehow". Everything about Essos is a gongshow, really outside of The Wall and R+L=J I bet he can't figure out where he's going with everything and he's just making it up as he goes along. I mean, he needs others to refresh him on his own fucking plot and characters ffs. When your fans know more about your own series than you do at this point, it's clear you've lost control or you don't care anymore.
>>
>>64387050

they most assuredly read the manuscript before they signed the contract. authors turn in their books about 18-24 months before publication. especially mainstream books like these that get their own advertising campaign.

I don't like one bit how the fact they're cutting stuff from the show is already implicitly telling us those things won't matter at all in the long run for the end of the series. See Coldhands, Aegon (assuming he's still cut?) etc.

ANYONE CAN DIE EBIN XD GAYME OF TROONES

I hate characters deaths so much. They're such a cheap way of getting emotion out of the reader.

I can understand it if it comes at the end, but the way Martin does it, you're just left with a less interesting story.

Reading AFfC and ADwD feels vacant as fuck, and not just because the characters are separated.

>>
>>64388801
I assume many people are just not going to watch the tv show and try to keep away from spoilers until the book comes out, if it ever does.

What you say also doesn't make much sense because it's true some things are going to get ruined in advance by the show but the story is taking a very different course from the books, so any bookfag who wanted to follow the story would stick to the books since the tv series does not progress along the same path.

Imagine going to see The Game of Thrones in the cinema and having the main character have his son crippled, then nearly killed by an assassin, then finding out about royal incest before being killed, all in two hours and with most of the non-Stark cast being removed because of time problems.

Then the second movie has a new main character, the son who's out for revenge and who just has a bunch of cool medieval battles.

It'd be the Godfather and Godfather II all over again.

Tolkien wrote much, much more than just The Silmarillion which itself went through at least three rewrites. You seem to forget The Silm isn't just the 300 page book published a few years after his death, it's 10+ volumes worth of unfinished material, including tens of legends within legends and 3+ invented languages. He also worked very little on it during the years he wrote The Lord of the Rings and when he had finished it no one wanted to publish it (his dream was to get it published together with TLOTR), so he had to settle on the latter. And since you seem to have read his Letters, you'd remember the first half is correspondence with his publisher about The Hobbit and then his son who was fighting in WW2 about writing TLOTR and most of the second half is answering questions about The Lord from readers and explaining stuff.

It's true that it took him a lot to start work on TLOTR though.

I think the Quentyn stuff is the most redundant out of everything Gurm has done so far.

Like, what did it add? We got a tiny bit of info on some mercs, and we got to see what Volantis looked like.

All of that could have been done via other characters, it seems totally pointless. He's literally only there for the "Sun rises in the west and sets in the east" part of the prophecy.

Dany's dragons ARE going to turn on her, she's been built up as this fire immune, dragon taming walking God so much that GRRM will have her about to win then become dragon shit in a huge twist. It's the only way I see her story coming to an end now that she's been exposed as a shit ruler and irrational idiot in the novels/TV show.

Not him but I've only read the hobbit and lotr, I've always been confused by all the other books, what is narrative and what isn't etc.
What should I get? It doesen't help that everything has been published differently in each country, so I'm specifically asking about english editions

>Stannis confirmed dead
Since the show is Canon now, i'm pretty pissed about this. Best actor and character gets killed off and in a horrid way by stronk woman brienne.

>I think Quentyn was mostly used to show us just how much of a crafty motherfucker Doran is. I need a good reread of the series though.

Sure, but did we REALLY need POV chapters for it? I mean he could have just showed up at Mereen.

George probably spent months writing and thinking up those chapters, that just really added nothing to the narrative

Why not just throw a script at some ghostwriters and laugh at his retarded fanbase?

Which HacknHack will change. Showing Dany as anything less than a Mary Sue will upset the tumblrinas too much. At least that's something that's not GRRM's fault.

I had a hint his story was going to somehow merge with Tyrion or at least have an influence over it, that's why I think they showed us all that mercenary shit. I wouldn't bet on it though, the sooner I reread it the sooner I can verify if Quentyn's chapters really are pointless

the boring Dany chapters led to her riding a fucking dragon

Quentyn just got cucked by Dany, pretty meris, the tattered prince, rhaegal, viserion, and life

By god I hope those dragons all turn to Aegon's side and we get Aegon the Conqueror reborn.

Aegon the Reborn or Aegon the Restorer/Resurrector (by placing the Targaryens back on the throne) could be good names

The way they completely destroyed his character before killing him off will also leave a sour taste.

> surely the absence of proof is proof of absence

I mean, you're probably right here but be careful with that
