Rey's engineering aptitude was deliberate. There has been a lot of talk in recent years about why North American women don't pursue STEM degrees as much as guys do, with people throwing out the usual bullshit hypotheses (sexism, cultural limitations, etc.). Rey is an attempt to inspire a generation of grills to get into STEM, and it just might work - lots of women in such fields already cite characters like Dana Sculley as childhood inspiration.
This won't have any effect in China, India, and the Middle East because the STEM gender ratio is already even (or female-dominant in the case of Iran) despite rampant sexism and stricter gender roles in their societies.
