I think the choreography made it clear that Kylo was just toying with him throughout the fight. Once Finn actually took advantage and landed a blow, Ren got buttfrustrated and wrecked his shit.
The lightsaber duel was really well choreographed and actually reflected the characters' strengths and weaknesses. Ren was well trained, but arrogant and insecure. Finn was brave, but outmatched. Rey was talented, but fearful and reluctant. Great fight overall.
