The idea of "force powers" and that being a jedi is something you go to school for are completely nonsensical and only exist because of the EU and because of Lucas' shitty ideas in the prequels (which most fans would be quick to decry). What the force allows a Jedi to do is not some DnD list of abilities that have specific names, or that you learn in "Advanced Forceimetrics" in jedi school. The force is a mysterious, powerful and binding thing which has no purpose or inherent abilities. It's a magical concept from which a user can manipulate a variety of effects that doesn't distinguish between good or bad (you don't have to be evil to choke someone). The ability of one to use the force isn't measured by some quantifiable fact, it's based on one's belief in the force, and their own self-acceptance and clarity of thought. This is all according to the original trilogy, which you guys claim to love so much.
So, what is the training for? The training isn't about teaching force abilities or how to use a lightsaber. That's prequel nonsense. Training to become a jedi is learning to connect yourself to the force, to understand your limitations and eliminate your doubts. It's essentially enlightenment. It's learning to avoid fear, temptation, and anger which lead to the dark side. The dark side is not diametrically opposed to the good, it's just another side of the same coin. When Yoda instructs Luke in ESB the real training isn't lifting rocks, it's when Luke goes into the swamp and confronts his internal fears; that he will become Vader. If that wasn't proof enough, despite leaving in the middle of his training, Luke returns in RotJ and Yoda tells him that his training is complete - even though he didn't do anything. Yoda also says he's not a true jedi until he confronts Vader - that's because becoming a Jedi isn't a test of ability, it's a test of faith.

I read Harbingers on /co/ a few days ago and it really showcased what I want out of "strong female characters". It's all about presentation. Rey is symptomatic of the explicit, obvious writing that so often goes hand-in-hand with the "war on sexism!!", but Harbingers takes a much more realistic portrayal. It never ever EVER talks about anything in the context of sexism (except for when Kris and Flamingo first meet but it's written as Kris being a bitch anyway). This works in it's favor because the idea of fighting sexism is that you think it shouldn't exist, so the best way to show what you mean is to act as if it doesn't.
Don't make character concepts with sexism in mind. It makes them shallow and sexist. Make characters. Give them life and depth.
