On par with To the Wonder. In other words, plebeians will ignore it because they will think it's pretentious, but it isn't. It's beautifully shot and worth more than one watch in my opinion.

I want Malick to work with a new cinematographer. Lubezki and him have kind of reached a plateau in terms of style.

Tree Of Life was groundbreaking in terms of cinematography, but I don't want Malick to just rehash the same thing anymore. It's boring.
>>
Just finished it, pasting this from other thread
>Christian Bale wanders around the GTA V Map: The Cinéma

I kid, it was brilliant. Obviously a sermon/polemic against spiritual corruption via the world of Hollywood, vice, excess and such. Very transcendental and/or Christian. Beautiful images. Score was perfect.

Never thought i'd see Jo Lo Truglio and Tom Lennon in a Malick film, or Fabio playing "himself." Also apparently Nick Kroll who I missed.

And he literally sampled one of the best scenes in Twin Peaks, the Major's vision

You think that was his and NatPort's baby at the end and she lied about abortion?

As far as ranking, I dunno. Very similar to TTW which I loved. I can't rank his filmography, all at least 9s.

it's beautifully shot (except for that reflection scene) but it wasn't a good film

Beautiful film. Could relate to all of it. Something about haunting female beauty, trippy parties, and transcendental musings on the souls longing for God that hits the fucking spot

>>
#3 for me. I really need to watch it again. While it didn't seem overtly complex, I feel like I'll understand it much better with another viewing. I feel like I missed a lot, which is rare for a Malick film, at least for me. I know nothing of tarot, which I'd like to look into to better understand the chapters.

perfect sample, some lynchian stuff in this film as well as the poignancy of the father/son theme
>>
Most memorable moments:

>that creepy ass girl with the cut-out eyes in the beginning
>the moon girl
>suicidal depression being like "getting swallowed by a snake"
>the damnation monologue and that eerie billboard montage
>the party with the luchadores, girls hanging from the ceiling, and that like 1 second shot of that girl with reddish eyes, just something so haunting about it
>the strip club scene, the music playing in the background like a dream
>the different mornings at the beginning of freedom, so many gorgeous shots

I was hooked from the first trailer. It was everything I wanted it to be
>>
>>64357119

>On Terrence Malick, whom he admires: It's so strange; I never knew what happened to him. I saw Richard Gere in New Orleans one time, and I said, "What ever happened to Terry Malick?" And he said, "Everybody asks me that." He said, "I have no idea." But later on I met Terry. And he just - he just decided that he didn't want to live that life. Or so he told me. He just didn't want to live the life. It wasn't that he didn't like the films. It's just, if you could do it without living in Hollywood ...

> Whatever it took to function as a Hollywood personality had an enormous price for him, and he could see it as something that destroyed a lot of people, and almost made nobody get better as a person. And you’ve only got one life, and do you want to live it this way, where you’re constantly having to schmooze the suits? He’s incredibly skillful at something he presumably abhors, and maybe at a certain point he had to throw that over or drown in it.

> He could see the effects of Hollywood on the various people he knew, the people who lived completely immersed in that world as though that were the world, like, say, Warren Beatty. For Terry, the world is bigger than that.

>>
>>64362834
Antonio Banderas' definitely was. Rick with the Asian Twins was, and I remember another bender scene that evoked that feeling too. The photoshoot scene was even though it wasn't technically a party. I agree that there was beauty at these parties, the acrobatic sheet dance/striptease comes to mind as one of the most beautiful shots in the film, but I'm fairly certain they were supposed to be more repulsive than attractive on the whole.
>>
>>64359147
God bless you Malick.
>>
Pseudo-intellectual pleb bait.
>>
>>64363115

I can see why we are supposed to feel that, but maybe they really are beautiful layers of the pearl.

Like we definitely see the strife that would be considered suffering for the film's world. The brother, the dad, the earthquake, the breakups, the abortion.
>>
>>64363115

I didn't feel beauty or disturbance in huge doses. I just felt a foreboding sense of isolation and loneliness.
>>
>>64363247
The inherent nature of beauty is a whole 'nother conversation. Extrapolating on the film's themes I think the argument that there is beauty to be found in everything works, but it is an admittedly abstract concept. I think the way the visceral and immediate presentation of the empty decadence of the parties throughout the film is more directly supposed to revile rather than inspire.
>>
Nice toe scene, but are there shots of Natalie Portman's soles in the movie?
>>
>>64363542

I'll definitely keep an eye out for that when I see it properly at the cinema. But man even the guy describing the k-hole seemed beautiful as opposed to repulsive.
>>
>>64362512
no, because you need to see and appreciate the beauty of God before you become a Christian

since that didnt happen to you in TTOL then you haven't submitted to loving Christ yet
>>
>>64363325
I think the parties amplified those themes of isolation though, as well as making Rick's surreal inability to connect with people and the way he only picked up fragments of conversations more concrete. It seemed slightly more nightmarish to me.
>>

>>64363658
Like I said I completely agree that "everything is as it should be," is undoubtedly one of the central themes of the film, and like the Buddhist guy said that if you sit back in the current moment you will eventually be able to realize that everything is connected and therefore beautiful and perfect. I just think on a more immediate level the film is trying to show how even the most illustrious and decadent parties are hollow and predicated upon an artifice that is damaging to our humanity.

I haven't seen KoC yet but it looks like it will be pretty good. I like Malick as a person and think he would be interesting to hang out with and talk to but I can't say I'm crazy about his films. What I have found is that the more overt he is with his religiosity the shittier his films are. TTW and DoH are my top picks of his. I feel TTRL and TNW would be up there but the eye-rollingly forced Kierkegaardian bullshit is pervasive in those films. I was indifferent to Badlands and I found ToL to be insufferable.

What must be understood about Malick is that he is literally channeling Kierkegaard in all of his works. He is obsessed with the idea of the Knight of Faith. Which is okay with some people but personally I find Kierkegaard to be a lowbrow meme philosopher and Christian Existentialism to be an impotent and pathetic response to the reality of our situation as the human animal. It is a denial. It is having your cake and eating it too, which, ironically, is exactly what Malick did in that little anecdote about him upthread regarding him using the resources and talent of Hollywood but not living in Hollywood or "being Hollywood".
>>
>>64364077
I'm fairly confident in stating that the emptiness of materialism is one of the themes of the film. Rick's womanizing, Banderas' party and his voice-over during, the way Rick's success, agents, and boss were presented, as well as the general feelings of despair in all of the characters who were living by all superficial measures the best lives conceivable all lead me to think there's some merit to the observation.

Not about to start a philosophical debate, but I'm just curious: do you think that our consciousness and humanity is the pinnacle of intelligence in our universe? I've certainly believed that idea myself at times, but once you take the idea of their being more to existence as a given I think a lot of those impotent and pathetic responses make a lot more sense.
>>
>>
>>64364514
Banderas' party was arguably the most lavish of the film, set a decadent estate with immaculately dressed guests and scenery. He seems like a charming and interesting host, going around and flirting and entertaining all of his guests individually. But throughout this whole scene, he is voicing his true inner thoughts which reveal that he is unrepentantly selfish and hedonistic. He says that he only cares about himself and his needs and pleasures, and only cares about women in relation to how much pleasure they can bring him. His entire magnanimous and dazzling nature (and by extension his whole party) is shown to be nothing more than an elegant facade with a slightly evil undercurrent to it.

I guess it's possible but it's entirely irrelevant to the fact that I find Kierkegaardian philosophy to be both a smug and pseudo-humble copout regarding man's situation in facing the horrors of life, and I find Malick's obsession with it boring. I don't dislike Malick though, I just disagree with his worldview although I understand why someone would have that worldview

This is my first malick film and I'm not sure if the rest of his works are like this but this was really pretentious without any redeeming dialogue, or plot, or character development.

Almost self indulging desu.

Makes it very hard to relate to the main character. I couldn't find one person to give a shit about in this whole film. If that was what malick was going for then hes done it well.

But I was pretty much rolling my eyes the whole time. Nice music though and lots of beautiful shots

Start with Badlands, son.

himself

i think this is a partly autobiographical rendition of why he holds so much disdain for the hollywood lifestyle

I'm not a fan of Malick but your reasons for disliking the film are pleb-tier
>>

>ignoring the fact that I mentioned how I though it felt self-indulging
>ignoring that I said it felt pretentious and was lacking in character development

work on your reading comprehension and try to keep up

elaborate.

Have you just become desensitized to what you now consider to be "basic" complaints of pretentiousness and monotony or do you actually have a more grounded reason?
>>
>>64368184

Pretend you are the main character. Pretend like you are character.

Then change the word "pretend" to "realize".
>>
>>64368742

*pretend like you are EVERY character
>>
Alright, /tv/, let's settle this once and for all.

Is this film, cinema, or kino?

Malick
>>
>>64368742
hmm I see where you're going with this and I will admit it makes me want to give the characters more of the benefr of the doubt. But I can't help but hold on to my original beliefs. The main issue here I think is that its not so much that I don't think his (or other characters) issues are legitimate but rather that they handle them in ways I don't agree with. And I don't think there is a way to bridge that gap but acknowledging is enough I think.

god damn, it fucking amazes me how people can be bad at watching movies

Can you please give me an example of what you mean? Like what issues and how did they handle them, as opposed to how you would have handled them?

this has to be b8
I refuse to believe that people are this selfish

Fucking awful. Another Malick film that completely insists upon itself. The man is total disconnected from reality.

damn, portman has weird looking feet.

Tree of Life = Knight of Cups > The New World > To The Wonder > Thin Red Line > Days Of Heaven > every other film ever made
>>
If a film student made this movie and whacked it on Youtube, filled to the brim with beautiful women at fancy parties, voice overs feinting an understanding of philosophy, endless shots of meaningless landscapes and space and a guy in a suit constantly walking around looking sad, it would be laughed off the internet as cringe material.

But for some reason this trash is acceptable if it has Malick's name on it. Yuck.
>>
>Hey Lubezki, go around town with dubsguy and take some cool looking shots. Script? LMAO, don't worry we'll fix it with voice over in editing
>>
>>64373171
Why do people have such a hardon for Tree of Life? I guess it's the film that introduced Malick to youngsters.

I'd go:
Days of Heaven
The New World DC
Badlands
TTRL
TOL
TTW

get out of here with this bullshit. how fucking dare you use those three words, which as far as I can tell from the lone, reckless sentence you provide don't even grasp the implications and essence of, without explanation or testimony
>>

Same here, but with KOC as number 1.
>>

fair enough that i shouldnt be judging the films merits based on those things but is whats being communicated really all that profound? seems like the dude is stroking himself off the whole time.

maybe i just need to get back on my antidepressants. Haven't been able to enjoy anything without them. ill give it a couple more watches. Maybe I'll get it then.

>Hey Lubezki, go around town with dubsguy

During the part at the house party where that girl shows him her nails and says something like "Do you like this shade of pink?" and he says "Very nice." I was legitimately expecting there to be a closeup on Bale's sweaty face as he says "Now let's see Paul Allen's nails"

How is that possible? You must be an idiot.

WTF? Its like Tree of Life only without horrible CGI and space visuals as pleb bait...
