Nah, the Sith had similar techniques, Duke just didn't know how, at this point in time only Qui-Gon and maybe Plagueis had the ability and knowledge to do it.
A larger plot hole is that Dooku, being privvy to Sidious' plans (as shown when he arrived at Coruscant at the end of AotC), still didn't see that he had to be killed off.
The separatists were never meant to win and he was their leader. So in the new galactic Empire there would be no room for a leader of a defeated faction. He would need to be killed off before Order 66 is executed so Sheev would have to eliminate him.

He only lost that fight because he was distracted be Palpatine's robes.

The problem is that the game is rigged for Palpatine to win.
The whole civil war is just to elevate Palpatine to Emperor tier and create the Empire.
Dooku could never benefit from that since he was actively fighting against the galactic community as a separatist.
Even if he betrayed and defeated Palpatine it's not like he could waltz into the senate and declare himself emperor. He'd still just be a leader of the separatists, who don't really seem to be capable of winning the war either way.

The movies would have been far better had Dooku been a Rogue Jedi fighting against the Jedi because they did not believe him that a sith lord was in control of the republic. The separatist movement would be them trying to fight the empire's rise. It would have made a much better reveal and overall arc if Dooku turned out to be the good guy.
The way it's structured now it's just Lucas enforcing the rule of two and having Anakin unknowingly kill the apprentice.
