R2 woke up because he was saving his electricity for the appropriate moment.
Little old R2 was sad because his old buddy Luke was sad and was far away. Little R2 missed his old buddy, but when little BB8 showed up R2 was reminded of friendship and what it means to have buddies. He still missed his old buddy but he stopped being so sad and he forgave the world for taking his old buddy away
He woke up when BB-8 came up to him, but it took him a third of the movie to fully wake up apparently
When C3P0 told BB-8 R2 was in sleep mode and they left him, we should have at least seen like a single blinking light on him or something
we needed some sign so it didn't seem like he magically woke up at an arbitrary moment later on
What posses me off the most is that they could have had R2 wake up in the beginning with the map, and had everyone go "Oh hey, so this is where Luke fucked off to, let's find the final part of this map", which would make sense, but no. JJ has to use his middle school poetic devices because how else could he be an utter hack?
They said the Jakku section of the map didn't match any known star chart, but clearly it does because they recognise it immediately at the end of the film.
