Did you know, Pocahontas is based on a REAL story, and it's not half as glamorous as you'd want it to be?

After binge-watching Pocahontas 1+2 with my niece, I kinda got mad when PocaHOEntas dumped John Smith for another, even slicker John, after the first John got into trouble in the second movie.
It made be mad, because I didn't expect Disney to present Pocahontas in such a promiscuous, disloyal way. I just wanted to read some critiques on this issue, but then I found out that it's, in fact, not Disney's fault; it's just based on the real Pocahontas' love life.

This, as disappointing as this already is, is just the tip of the iceberg though. After doing some research I found out what's hiding under the surface, and it's a pretty ugly and disappointing story.

The real Pocahontas was born in 1595. The incident from the first Pocahontas movie happened around 1606/1607.
So Pocahontas was an 11 yo loli when John Smith, almost 30 yo, had an alleged liasion with her. He was even celebrated as a romantic hero in folklore later. Then, some years later, she went to GB as a "mediator" between her tribe and the colonialists.
She was still a kid, maybe 15 yo, and I'm afraid her "mediation" didn't quite work out like in the movie. How did they communicate anyway? Then she seduced another whity boy John, got preggo, married him, and died at... 21... Wow.

There was no great love story.
No John Smith sacrificing himself for Pocahontas's dad - he was rather a pedo creep, who was also known for buying the first 20 black slaves several years later in Jamestown.
Also, no great mediation between the peoples happened, too; her tribe was later killed anyway, unlike in the movies.

In the end, she was just a horny nympho teenager who fucked the right white men to get her name written into history books. Her nickname was "Matoaka", which means the "playful one".

Reality is so ugly and boring, compared to that romantic Disney stuff. Ugh.

A lot of Disney movies are based on stories that are very dark which involve death, torture, sex and violence.

This was a complaint you used to hear alot, before the tumblr children started praising Disney movies as the greatest thing ever.

As this anon says:>>64345077 most Disney adaptations are horribly watered down from their origins. A lot of their adaptations have been from the works of Hans Christian Andersen, who more or less always had dark endings to his stories.

No, it's abso-fucking-lutely not. She couldn't even communicate with those people. She was most likely held and presented like a wild and crazy animal, until it became boring and she was sent back home, with her new hubby, who was twice as old and probably just used her as a sex doll.
>>
>While the general age of consent is now set between 16 and 18 in all U.S. states, the age of consent has widely varied across the country in the past. In 1880, the age of consent was set at 10 or 12 in most states, with the exception of Delaware where it was 7.[3] The ages of consent were raised across the U.S. during the late 19th century and the early 20th century.[4][5] By 1920 ages of consent generally rose to 16-18 and small adjustments to these laws occurred after 1920. As of 2015 the final state to raise its age of general consent was Hawaii, which changed it from 14 to 16 in 2001.[6]

>How did her work come to fruition again? Ah, her tribe was slaughtered, right!

I never said she helped her tribe, just that we can see how the relations between the English and her tribe really went down.

>I didn't say I wish the world was a Disney movie; I just criticised Disney movies for being disappointingly unrealistic; that's a difference
Fair enough, but all I said was that the real story is interesting and you disagreed ("No, it's abso-fucking-lutely not.")

(Those other two dipshits aren't me by the way)
>>
>>64346010
Does it matter in the end? She failed, even if she learned English. Romantic->beautiful adult woman finds love of her life, saves her tribe, etc. Reality->poor sex slave child with no impact. Didn't you say "it's better to understand why something is horrible"? In order to understand, you gotta face the ugly truth first. From that point, you can move on, a bit smarter than before. By romanticising the story, you do the opposite of what you just said.

>Traditionally, across the globe, the age of consent for sexual union was a matter for the family to decide, or a tribal custom. In most cases, this coincided with signs of puberty, menstruation for a woman and pubic hair for a man.
Sir Edward Coke in 17th century England ‘made it clear that the marriage of girls under 12 was normal, and the age at which a girl who was a wife was eligible for a dower from her husband’s estate was 9. The American colonies followed the English tradition, and the law was more of a guide. For example Mary Hathaway of Virginia, was only 9 when she was married to William Williams.
>Portugal, Spain, Denmark and the Swiss canons, initially set the age of consent at 10-12 years and then raised it to between 13 and 16 years in the second half of the 19th century. Historically, the English common law set the age of consent to range from 10- 12.

That's because they didn't care about some kike that was nailed to stake before their worshipers nearly decimated them.
They had a concept of time they didn't have a gregorian calendar which they could have used to establish an accurate date had they not exterminated the entire tribe.

Also you might want to tone it down because it's getting to obvious that you're trolling.

>>
>>64346475
Totally not. There are many things that matter: love, joy, happiness, family, spirituality, health, etc. However, it does not matter, whether a 11-15 year old girl - who failed at mediating between tribes - learned English or not. That's 400 years ago. However, what matters is the moral of the story, given humans' nature hasn't changed ever since: we are disgusting, brutal creatures, and it's a fact that history is written by the winners, who glorify and rationalize everything for the sake of avoiding cognitive dissonance and remorse. We would rather shatter the mirror than change ourselves. That's a relevant and everlasting truth and the reason why Pocahontas is such a cheesy flick, and history books are 99% fairytales, too, winners presenting themselves at their best.
>>
>>64346603
I never claimed they didn't have a concept of time, moron. I simply said I think it's unlikely we actually know her birth year, obviously referring to the Gregorian year, which you, obviously trolling, attempting to spin into saying they didn't have a concept of time. Turns out I was right all along.
>>
>>64346249
Well that and the fact that back then you didn't really get to have an adolescence as we know it today.

Girls were married off as soon as they were able to. Boys were basically slave labor for the family until they're old enough to get married and move out, or take over the farm so you can retire.

As productivity begins to increase thanks to technology, and the frontier disappearing, its not such a burden raising children, and you don't have to work them/get rid of them as fast as possible. Now you've got time for them to have a "childhood" as we understand it in modern times.
