Can you beat this pleb's top ten list?

1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 version, not the shitty 2004 remake)
2. Ringu ('98 Japanese film, not that shitty 'Murican remake)
3. Alien
4. The Exorcist
5. The Changeling
6. Halloween/The Thing '82 (a tie with same director; no shitty remakes)
7. The Shining
8. The Mummy (1932)
9. Poltergeist '82/Jaws (a tie, directed by Spielberg; the former rumored)
10. The Conjuring (best "scared shitless" horror movie in many blue moons)
>>
>>64336648
The Ring is better than Ringu
The Changeling is good but not scary
The Mummy really is nothing special
Poltergeist isn't scary or especially great
The Conjuring was good, but not top 10 material

The only foreign film you list is Ringu, try some French/Spanish/Korean/more Japanese horror.

OP here, let me clarify:

>The Ring is better than Ringu

Could be, but it's all color timed to obnoxious effect, plus car action during the girl popping out of tv set in cross cut broke the tension and dread isolation seen in the Japanese version.

>The Changeling is good but not scary

Not even bouncing ball on the stair, roving old wheelchair and the ending with the creepy music box playing itself?

>The Mummy really is nothing special

Not even creepy atmosphere mood could be effective for you, lol

>Poltergeist isn't scary or especially great

Not even killer clown doll could make you hate these creepy clown dolls

>The Conjuring was good, but not top 10 material

But, it's one of the scariest movies yet released. It's so scary MPAA gave it an R rating for terror alone, lol

Those who find the above listed movies not so scary must be jaded.

Pic related, the creepy ol' wheelchair...

I guess some scientist did some research and the conclusion was the shining was the scariest movie ever made.

this meme needs to stop.
it was directed by Tobe Hooper. and considering he directed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre too you really should fucking know this, OP.

not that scary. Blair Witch Project is scarier than all of these

Here's the answer whether Tobe really directed the movie.

I suspect there are many more people who will say Texas Chainsaw Massacre, more so than The Exorcist, is the scariest movie they've ever seen, in terms of primal fear referring to "fear of the unknown" coined by HP Lovecraft.

The term means no plot explanation for why or what the villains are doing in exposition.

Current generation (from Millennial to now) will say The Conjuring the scariest movie they ever saw to date.

They find old horror movies quaint and not so scary because they've been spoiled.

No, sorry, you can't just come up with your teenage hipster faggot taste and call the remake "shitty". You are shitty. You and your retarded, "do I fit in yet" faggot taste.

It would have been perfect if you'd also have said Rosemary's Baby.

Ever seen Freaks? Ending should scare you with disgust, no wonder it got banned even in some states during Hays code period.

It got the director blacklisted for making a movie more horrifying than any film made at that point in time.

I never understood this. The american version is so much better. Is it just a way to prove to be a "real filmbuff" to claim to like the japanese one better?
>>
>tfw shimizu's raimi-produced grudge remake was better than his original version
>>
AmeRingu was a remake of a remake. There was a Ringu movie before that. A tv movie. It was alright. I'm just saying that in case you didn't see it and might want to.

The list you rpovided isn't that pleb, it's just not the SCARIEST horror movies. It's the BEST horror movies. Except for The Conjuting. That was a movie so average that it might be able to get the rights to the Average label. Fuck that movie in it's mundane, average, normal, predictable ass.
>>
>>64336648
American ring was better
>>
>>64340653

If you're talking grisly Italian movies, the only way to find these movies are through black market bootleg including torrenting or renting at the remaining few indie video stores anywhere.

The most disgusting "horror" movie ever made is A Serbian Film. Second is Necromancer.

Still have never seen Human Centipede films, even though its available on Netflix stream since forever. Said to be too disgusting in content and wretched in quality.

I'm talking scary horrors, not disgusting in terms of "moar" gore.
>>
>>64340681
It must be it. Besides, The Grudge was better. Scarier and less all over the place. Turning The Ring into a ghost story made it feel disjointed. I'm still waiting for a closer adaptation of the books. Something more sci-fi medical horror, less supernatural ghostlyhorror.
>>
>>64340865
Wow. Just... wow.

How new to movies are you? Torrenting or renting? They're on fucking jewtube! They air on tv all the time! Grisly for the 70s/80s is nothing now.
>>
>>64340681

Japanese Ring is understated with slow burn and atmosphere without Hollywood bullshit like color filter for the look.

Hollywood always fuck up the original foreign films just because they can, and it's all about pandering to the pleb commoners for the shekels.
>>
>>64340928

It requires expending my effort to locate the fairly obscure foreign horror movies.

I've seen Cannibal Holocaust and Ferox, and they disgust me more than scare me.
>>
>>64340941
The only good foreign asian horror remake was The Grudge (the first one), and that's because it was made by the Japanese director, in Japan, but with an american lead. In fact, the isolation and foreign factor of the american lead made the movie better (at least for me) than the original 2 versions.
>>
>>64340979
CH and CF aren't obscure. At all. CH was on tv just 2 months ago ffs.

1. Silent Hill 2 (the video game, yeah - scared me more than any movie)
2. Hour of the Wolf (Bergman)
3. Inland Empire (Lynch)
4. Pulse/Kairo (Kurosawa)
5. The Shining (Kubrick)
6. Cure (Kurosawa)
7. Don't Look Now (Roeg)
8. The Vanishing/Spoorloos (Sluizer)
9. The Curse/Noroi (Shiraishi)
10. Martyrs (Laugier)
>>
>>64341270
I hated Kairo, but I can see why people like it.

The Vanishing was chilling. I loved it, but it's not something I would rewatch. It's a must-see though.

Noroi was good. It was really captivating.

All in all, you have good taste, my man.

Ok, you got me beaten.

A side note, FucKonami cancelled Silent Hills, which is what you want that could supersede your favorite video game.

For me, Resident Evil 4 is a great game. Best game is the original Resident Evil in its primal pixeled rawness.
>>
>>64341359

Incidentally, Kubrick said The Vanishing is the scariest movie he ever saw, because of the horrific implication of death at the ending.

Good job referencing the movie, I saw it when I was a kid and it scared the shit out of me, but it's more like a suspense thriller and less horror except the implicit ending.
>>
>>64341359
I never knew Pulse was so polarizing until I posted about it a few times in horror threads, but I can see why some people dislike it. It's pretty meandering in the 3rd act. Gotta rewatch Spoorloos, it's been ages since I last saw it. Thanks!

Not necessarily, but it's all about experience on the first time viewing without knowing much beforehand (avoiding spoilers as much as possible, or forget biased nostalgic childhood memories).

It's what makes the difference, and all the better. Although I personally thought The Exorcist overrated, but good effort nonetheless.
>>
>>64340865
>The most disgusting "horror" movie ever made is A Serbian Film
August underground is more disgusting imo
>>
>>64340058

This.

That fucking thud when Leatherface hits the guy over the head and then the body spasm felt all too real. Modern horror always goes over the top when it comes to gore and stuff, that you don't really feel anything when it happens because it just doesn't seem real at all.
>>
>>64341867

Low budget pooled by a group of colleagues plus actually inflicting pain upon Marilyn Burns with her real screams also amplify the realism to a horrifying effect resembling a lurid snuff film.

While many look at this movie as a laughably bad cheap piece of shit, to some it's efficiently frightening because of how well staged horror elements are combined with sleazy reel porno-styled 16mm Kodak Ekenchrome film stock, which made it feel a bit too realistic.

Also, the music and creepy and sudden sound effects.
>>
>>64339937
It got banned because they thought it was offensive to cast actual deformed people tard
>>
In no particular order, and scary to ME:

Candyman
Julia’s Eyes
Rabid
Friday the 13th (I didn't care too much about the sequels and reboot, but the original had a gritty, realistic 70s feel to it that made it scary)
Phenomena
Le Demon dans l'ile
Inferno
The Sentinel
Monkey Shines
Black Sunday
>>
>>64342059
>The Sentinel

Nice.
>>
In terms of unsettling, the murder tapes in Sinister still wins for me. The way they were made were brilliant. They had some kind of eerie realism to them, and the music used in them were perfect.
>>
>>64342958
Derrickson is great at putting excellent scenes in not quite excellent movies.
>>
The Exorcist
The Exorcist III: Legion
Dagon
The Haunting
The Grudge (American)
The Descent
Jaws (admit it, it's scary)
The Old Dark House
Mama (shit ending though)
Dark Water (Jap version)
