GoT doesn't have this. It has interesting/complex characters sure, but that doesn't make it a good fantasy.

This only holds true if you value plot over characters.
LOTR does have a grander plot, but character-wise most of them are pretty poorly fleshed out, with nearly every person in the books/movies being either unambiguously good, or unambiguously evil.

I like how in GOT they are always building up to the epic battle, but when it arrives the budget constraints mean we never see it and its usually told in the manner of "hey Tyrion, you blacked out and missed an epic battle bro!"
