>>
>>64334054

It's a cartoon on film
>>
>>64334091
>>64334126
It's a fucking glorified cartoon, stop deluding yourself into thinking its something else.
>>
>>64334197
It's an animated film, there's a strong tradition of them back to the golden age of cinema
>>
>>64334197
Why can't cartoons be films? They require much more effort to make than live action.
>>
The thing is that technically speaking films are just recordings of human actions, and traditional cartoons like the early Disney stuff are just recordings of human drawings - and in fact many cartoons of the early era are recorded on film.
>>
>>64334367
>and in fact many cartoons of the early era are recorded on film
you mean almost every work of animation created in the 20th century

evangelion was animated on film which was actually a big deal because they lost some of the original proofs which meant they had to redraw them for BD
>>
>>64334367
Just because it's recorded on film doesn't make it a film you dingus, movies, cinema, and flicks exist too
>>
Not in the top 50, maybe in the top 100.
>>
>>64334054
>>64334197
>>64334314
Nope, it's a film. It has scenes of IRL japanese people sitting in a crowded cinema, walking down the street, etc.
>>
>>64334032
It's pretty good yeah.
I could even appreciate it when I saw it without the context of the series.
>>
>>64334054
This and even then its nothing more than a flick like Donnie Darks
>>
/tv/ translation manual:

"Flick" - I did not like it and did not consider it a work of art
"Film" - I liked it and consider it a work of art
"Cinema" - I can't decide if I liked it but still consider it a work of art
"Movie" - I liked it but I do not consider it a work of art

Note that all of these words mean the same thing to people who can express their thoughts in a sane manner. In addition, the opinions of posters on an anonymous imageboard should not be considered objective fact.

Film vs Movie vs Cinema is real, but kino, fllick, etc were added by tasteless drones that were made insecure by this whole thing.

“A movie is made for an audience and a film is made for both the audience and the filmmakers. I think that The Game is a movie and I think Fight Club‘s a film. I think that Fight Club is more than the sum of its parts, whereas Panic Room is the sum of its parts. I didn’t look at Panic Room and think: Wow, this is gonna set the world on fire. These are footnote movies, guilty pleasure movies. Thrillers. Woman-trapped-in-a-house movies. They’re not particularly important.” - David Fincher

"My film is not a movie. My film is not about Vietnam. It is Vietnam. It's what it was really like. It was crazy. We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane." — Francis Ford Coppola

>By contrast, in the US "movie" is the predominant form. Although the words "film" and "movie" are sometimes used interchangeably, "film" is more often used when considering artistic, theoretical, or technical aspects, as studies in a university class and "movies" more often refers to entertainment or commercial aspects, as where to go for fun on a date. For example, a book titled "How to Read a Film" would be about the aesthetics or theory of film, while "Lets Go to the Movies" would be about the history of entertaining movies.

movies are about economics.
cinema is about esthetics.
film is about politics.
-"How To Read A Film" by James Monaco

In terms of anime it is easily one of, if not potentially the, greatest films of all time.

However, this board is primarily for live action films/television, and the two are too different really judge alongside each other. What each strives to create and achieve are fundamentally different. It's like creating a ranking list with both books and comics on it. How to you do determine which is "best" when they excel at and strive for different things?

Though with that said /tv/'s EoE threads and anime threads in general are much better than /a/'s. It's actually always kind of fascinated me that /tv/ seems so engaged with NGE/EoE, considering how particularly the series is tied to the anime industry/fandom.

>>
Eva can never be the best because it's targeted towards a very limited audience. I don't see it as something that stays with you, something that offers new insights as you grow older and become wiser. I don't see it resonating with a 40 year old me as much as it does now.
>>
>>64335407
They have screenwriters, directors, composers, and voice actors. As well as animators, storyboarders, and Korean sweatshop labourers.
>>
>>64335478
eva threads on /a/ have too many years of baggage to lead to anything productive or really anything outside of the same couple autists yelling at each other.

but really, it makes sense that /tv/ would engage with it more heavily and on more levels (even discounting crossposting). it may be heavily inspired by experiences in otakudom but that doesn't mean that that particular limited lens is going to provide the clearest insights into it. in fact i think the argument could be made that it's an advantage for the viewer to have a more balanced background and approach when trying to glean the most out of something. certainly the real emotional core of the series isn't unique to the industry or fandom

Anno's answer is that it looked cool. Which is why any writer uses it. It's not like the Bible is deep or anything, it's a fucking code of ethics with scary stuff to make people obey it.

The emotional core of the series is loneliness. I think anyone can relate to that. A lot of people pretend not to and bash Shinji, but he's one of the easiest characters to empathize with in fiction.

Bud, that's a book with enough staying power to capture the imagination of and provide guidance for people for thousands of years.

You may not like what's in it because you're an enlightened fedora tipper who doesn't fall for fairy tales (like your parents and Kevin from school do), but there's no denying that the book has powerful content.

>>64339788
Yeah, but if you watch it straightaway then you miss out on why people demanded EoE. Plus EoTV is a lot more cathartic coming off of the series, it was meant to more directly flow into the other episodes. EoE was released after everyone had stepped back from the series for a couple years. EoTV was aired back to back with the rest of NGE. Plus EoE has much more impressive animation, and it's easy to feel let down by EoTV if you come into it after EoE.

Incidentally surviving aspects of the script indicate that the original fully animated TV ending of NGE may have actually been different from what happened in EoE. Whatever it was it's for certain that EoE is a modified version of it. EoE is great but it's best enjoyed after EoTV, not before.
