>the expanse renewed for 2nd season
when did everything go so RIGHT?
>It's real
Holy shit. There's still 1 good thing to watch going into 2016
>>64333166
>weve gone too far
holy shit thats meme
>space scifi comeback
>>64333166
thank you SyFy, life is worth living now in the new year.
That was quick
>>64333453
>star trek series next year
its true. all of it.
>>64333680
I didn't think that was until 2017?
>>64333293
>holy shit thats meme
For you.
Anyway this new season will be 13 episodes.
Has the budget been increased to compensate or is this a real terms cut?
Based SyFy
Well that's the first smart thing they've done in some time because it was immediately apparent this show had quality they haven't managed to create in some time. Eagerly awaiting the next episode.
Has episode 5 come out yet? I feel like I watched the first 4 like 2 fucking years ago
>The Expanse
>12 Monkeys
>Z Nation better than TWD
>Childhood's End was hugely ambitious and the results mostly satisfying
>3001 Final Odyssey adaptation in the works
>Hyperion adaptation in the works
>Brave New World adaptation in the works
When did SyFy regain its soul?
>>64334673
The 5th of January, I believe
Yeah I was pissed, I thought the show had just progressed to Ep 4. Nope, leak. Dammit.
>>64334704
>Z Nation better
Get out of here with that shit show it..
>than TWD
oh... well...
Just binged the first 4 episodes.
bretty gud
>>64334704
When they changed management?
>>64333166
>the expanse renewed for 2nd season
Well fuck me sideways. Good show, SyFy -sentence never uttered
>>64336709
>Write and hype Mars as Space Nazis
>The get obliterated instantly
I*m tired of this trope senpai
>>64336788
Z-Nation is good.
So this is pretty good?
Whats it about?
>>64337410
Space.
>>64335175
Z Nation isn't just better than TWD; It's a good show on its own right.
>>64337394
If anything, Mars are space communists. Not space nazis at all.
>>64337530
I was just expecting more from them after everyone in the show hyped up their miltitary strength.
>>64337551
That was the point - the most powerful ship in the most advanced navy got dealt with by a previously unknown group who appears to have the edge of everyone.
>>64337656
Yeah and I'm tired of this sort of trope in media. It bores me.
SyFy is GOAT now
they're adapting the magician books too, the pilot is available for download. its pretty good.
How tumblr/SJW/feminist is this show?
>>64337394
>The get obliterated instantly
They were complacent and got a good spanking for their trouble. If they'd known what they were up against they would have stood a a chance.
>>64337551
Put in the perspective of the show, I guess I can see that, but essentially Mars and Earth are the superpowers, kinda like Russia and The US in the 80s. Nobody really wants them to fight, cause they both can effectively completely destroy each other, and in effect, the entire solar system as far as humans are concerned. Mars as a culture is fairly communist in nature, and Earth isn't. Martians have better war tech, earth has numbers. The perception that Mars is warlike in the books is mostly propaganda, just like the perception that everyone on earth bones and does drugs and doesn't work is the reverse of that.
The Martians getting rekt so easily is mainly a plot device to make you go wtf in relation to whomever is wrecking them. Scary badass stealth ships coming from nowhere kind of thing.
>>64337707
Also the "stealth ship" part is glossed over, but in essence, in space battle being closer to the enemy is a tactical advantage when they have more torpedoes than you do.
>>64337741
Except you couldnt surprise either of them like Mars got surprised in the show.
>>64337741
>>The Martians getting rekt so easily is mainly a plot device to make you go wtf in relation to whomever is wrecking them
I know. And this sort of writing/trop bores me. I've seen in one too many times.
>>64337788
You could, with a stealth ship.
And I'm sorry you're bored. This is legitimately a good show.
>>64337858
I am not bored, it's a good show but Mars getting blown the fuck out after you've heard all of their greatness, without any build up just like that, bored me.
The beginning was interesting as fuck, reminded me of Event Horizon.
>>64336709
Very galactica.
>>64334704
>>64335175
>>64337468
>Z Nation better than TWD
>better
>Not retarded comedy/ripoffspoof of TWD done by some hyperactive 12 year old/shit
>If you think is better than Fear The Walking Dead either, you've got even shittier taste
Syfy looks like it's getting it's shit together but come on. TWD (not 100% like the comic, added homoshit, etc.nowithstanding) is definitely better
>>64337858
The MCRN is an usual choice for a waifu, but we shouldn't judge him too harshly.
>>64338068
It's not a comedy 'of TWD', please show me something solid for this argument.
TWD doesn't love the concept of world's end or zombies as much as the writers of the Z-Nation. This much is evident as creaters of Z-Nation make a world that's full of live and various different things compared to same set of woods TWD has been spinning around since season 1.
The love for characters shown in Z-Nation, how much they care and respect them as characters and in context of writing is ton higher than TWDs. They kill off the bad stinky bits but even then show lots of care for them (Cassie) and let alone killing a person with good writing behind them (Garnett) comes up with a spectacle of an episode.
It also has narrative economy where as TWD lacks it, spinning its wheels around terrible drama with barely nothing of relevance happening for entire season and honestly god boring way of pointing and shooting camera, about nothing that I recall of TWD compares to Hyams directed episodes which could be lifted from a movie. Death of Garnett had more love on it than any character death in TWD, the writers are thousand times more competent than anyone working in TWD post-pilot and they come up with a world more vivid with probably 1/50 of the budget of TWD and create characters that aren't just there to fill a void but serve a purpose. There are no mandatory 'when will Z-Nation kill off this character' like with TWD (when it came to niggers while back) because they actually write a coherent show that isn't there to just to *shock* the viewer with badly staged deaths.
I'm sorry but in comparison Z-Nation completely fucking obliterates The Walking Dead and is a good show on its own right.
>>64338233
Also the writers of Z-Nation put their loved characters through a fucking grinder in order to survive. They don't have the luxury of sitting in a fucking farm or in a prison for seasons end, they're constantly dying for water or food in the show. This just shows again, much more respect and love for the topic (world's end, zombies, survival) than TWD can muster up.
Only person in relative safety was Citizen Z and he had a mountain full of problems after a while and had to sweat his ass off for a half a season to survive in order to leave his compound that was compromised.
WHAT WAS ON PHOEBE AND WHY DO THEY THINK THE ICE HAUL SHIP WAS THERE
Should I watch this?
>>64338398
I don't fucking know.
>>64338413
That doesn't help
>>64338529
How the fuck am I supposed to know if you like it? Fucking idiot.
>Do you like cyberpunk
watch it
>Do you like multiple factions struggling against each other
watch it
>Are you patrician enough to understand that some of the production quality isn't exactly hot shit (bad CGI in parts)
watch it
>Do you miss Thomas Jane
watch it
>>64338529
>>64338398
It's only four 42 minute episodes for now, you can pretty much watch them all without losing much of your quality shitposting time on /tv/eddit so..
>not rooting for Mars.
>>64338565
Now was that hard?
>>64337706
Usual stuff. Strong woman captains, pilots and police chiefs, homosexual ambassadors, lots of race mixing, but the show doesn't run your face in it too much.
>>64333802
2017 is next year now. I believe their aiming for a January premiere.
>>64336709

>>64339079
Lasers are shit tier weapons compared to rail guns.
>>64339122
I was talking about how 99% sci-fi shows just handwave "lasers" that act nothing like lasers do IRL. The railguns and flak are fucking sick though.
The series could actually turn out to be really, really good.
>>64338376
>WHAT WAS ON PHOEBE AND WHY DO THEY THINK THE ICE HAUL SHIP WAS THERE
A research station and they clearly think the Canterbury crew are a bunch of assholes who go around fucking everything up.
Is this going to be like Game of Thrones, where I liked the first few episodes enough to read all the books to avoid being spoilered, only to then realise the TV show is garbage by comparison, thereby ruining what would otherwise have been an enjoyable TV experience?
>>64339192
The show is better than the first book in the series according to reviewers.
>>64339192
The books are actually sorta meh, if you want a similar, but superior series, read The Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson.
>>64339380
Based on what I've seen so far in the show, a better series to read would be the Company Wars-era books in C.J. Cherryh's Alliance-Union universe.
Particularly Heavy Time and Hellburner.
>>64333166
The show is probably meh but I love that poster
I've never understood how tv series make more moneys with more viewers, does it airs on a pay per view channel or something like that?
>>64340439
You can charge more for advertising. When it's streamed online they'll get payment for advertising per impression too.
>>64340576
that was a very good scene, the death
>>64339079
Not flak cannons. Flak in space would be idiotic, given that the direction of things blowing up can't be controlled and filling the area around your ship with stuff to confuse your targeting systems is ants on bread retarded.
They're basically gatling guns guided by targeting computers. Really though, it's nice to see a show approach space weaponry fairly realistically. Rail guns make holes in things rather than blowing them up, pdcs firing selfpropelled projectiles, torpedoes having to follow the same rules as ships in regards to gravity and targeting due to no aerodynamics. Just great.
>>64334704
childhood"s end was the most anticlimatic miniseries of all times
the 3 chapters were an 1 hour build up and hype to a situation that ended up being shit, whether it was a shitty column of light, kids flying or fucking satan
that being said i rather have shitty scifi than no scifi desu
>>64339192
ive read all the books, they are pretty good, if you read a lot of scifi they are sort of pop, entry level scifi but still decent. ive been enjoying the show so far, my only complaint is holdens actor isnt anywhere near how i pictured him in my mind and amos isnt nearly big enough. i dont think reading the books has ruined my enjoyment of the show much cause seeing the space battles and stuff is cool.
>>64333166
I watched the first episode, was kinda "meh" because i couldnt figure out a broader plot for it so i dropped it - is it worth the time now?
>>64337394
they had fucking god-like equipment on the ship
the only reason they got obliterated is because they were against something mysterious the plot will reveal and give a reason for them to have bigger gunnies
>>64341063
>it was meh. because i didnt get spoonfed
lol?
>>64340930
>ants on bread retarded
heh
>>64341087
What i remember from the first episode:
>Lol we detectives in space
>Cool space-ship, it would be a shame if something happened to it
>Earth
>lazy fucks falling into degeneracy
>using Belters for their labor/money gain
>lead by a fat whore
>Belters
>slave beta race
>terrorist scum
>fucked up bodies
>Mars
>united people with a common goal
>trying to spread humanity to the stars and leave this shit stain solar system
>not being Mars master race
>>64335175
Lol what? Z Nation was genuinely one of the best shows of 2015. Are you one of those retards who turned it off after the first episode because production values were low?
I bet you thought mars attacks was a shit film too
>>64341063
3 & 4 are the best eps so far.
Didn't really think it was that great. The Mormon subplot looks quite interesting though
>Syfy will never get back to the BSG golden age
>>64341204
>lead by a fat whore
She's clearly the power behind the throne.
>trying to spread humanity to the stars and leave this shit stain solar system
That would be the mormons, actually.
My only problem with the show is there are no qts
I wish space scenes werent so dark
I guess its because of realism but still
Has there been an update on 3001? I haven't seen anything announced for ages. Aren't they meant to be adapting Forever War too?
If only science fiction got the same big budget treatment that capeshit is getting
>>64341328
If only they'd brought more light.
>>64341072
One thing people are forgetting as well is that the show is realistic enough not to have convenient things like shields and being able to take evasive maneuvers in giant ships that would flatten your passengers into mush.
When a ship is burning at you at a high rate, you're not going to outrun it unless you have a big enough head start to get up to speed, so you pretty much have to sit there and get your weapons ready and wait.
Spaceflight is fairly realistic in this show, and when comparable sized ships fight, it's pretty much anyone's game if they have similar armaments. In the books it's basically "hope our defense cannons hit those incoming torpedoes, what they missed one? ok, hold on to something"
>>64341310
You clearly haven't been paying attention.
>>64341246
BSG was utter pleb tier garbage outside first season dude
>>64337895
they didn't exactly get BTFO,it was 6 on 1 and they ended up taking all 6 of the ships with them
>>64338233
it is a comedy of the walking dead tho. i just saw the first episode, and the group asks delta x-ray who sent them to their camp, and he responds "an ex-cop sitting in a prison with a few survivors"
that was clearly rick from TWD.
>>64341468
I'd say the cut off point was either past the resurrection ship arc, or midseason 3

>>64341529
yes, but their opponents clearly weren't a group of improvised terrorist on a suicide mission like they expected and used a technology they didn't know about. Which sound like the typical dumb "super secret weapon nobody knew about" scenario butif I got it right it's an important point in the story
>>64341781
>dumb "super secret weapon nobody knew about" scenario
Exactly what grinds my gears with it.
>>64341625
But then we'll miss the banter of everyone ripping on him for it.
If you guys are looking for more sci-fi I really recommend Dark Matter. It's basically Farscape with some elements that remind me of Mass Effect thrown in. I loved it and it also got renewed for a second season.
REMEMBER THE CANT
>>64342103
Fuck off Belter
>>64342067
Dark Matter wasn't sci-fi. It was shitty fan-fiction fantasy/cartoon tripe aimed at teenage girls and people who like Doctor Who and The 100. It's garbage
>>64341742
I'd say it's more like a grown man with a knife fighting 6 12 year old with a knives. Even if the grown man kills them all he's still going to bleed out.

>>64345290
Mars is a liberal democracy though, if all you need to be a fascist to some people is a formidable military, the world really is in trouble.
>>64345903
The ships look sexy as fuck, gotta admit.
>>64345903
Well spiffy uniforms that are 'uniform' in their look and create a fascist image because of traits that we associate with them usually through visual style, I think most militaries get shit on for that.
I remember reading comments about our military because of the starship troopers novel and addressing fascism
>>64345903
More to say conflating authoritarianism with spiffy uniforms because military represents = authority so then it becomes similarly dressed military people = fascism etc, is my only way of addressing that kind of thinking by said 'space nazi' guy above
>>64345903
>if all you need to be a fascist to some people is a formidable military, the world really is in trouble.
I recall Eisenhower made a speech on that subject long ago.
>>64346150
>>64346101
That's fair enough I guess, I've read the books and you see a bit more of Martian home-life there, but going off the show I guess all you see is their military.
And yeah, the uniforms aren't doing them any favours in the 'We're not evil' category.
I thought their sacrifice to get the crew off the Donnager made them a bit more sympathetic though.
>>64346207
Eisenhower's farewell speech and centering the topic on the Military Industrial Complex had more to do with societal balance.
Taking his speech out of context is dishonest
>>64346041
Yeah, I love that the ship design. I'm glad they stuck with the realistic designs and didn't just use some handwavium artificial gravity tech like BSG or Star Trek.
>>64346284
Historically Britain and the US had both been suspicious of having large standing armies (although they never had a problem with naval power). I don't think it's unreasonable to ask about the long term effects of militarization on a society.
Have I been living under a fucking rock or something?
The Expanse? As in... Leviathan Wakes?
>>64346373
Yep. It's now a show.
>>64334704
>all adaptions
Where are the original shows? Fuck Syshit.
>>64346362
Yeah, in the UK our military is always cut to the bone in peacetime, our army currently has 80,000 men, from a population of 64 million.
It's the same reason our police don't (routinely) carry guns and their traditional colour is blue, the opposite of the red of the army, Robert Peel wanted to allay fears of a permanent police force simply becoming an extension of the military for the government to use against it's own people.
In the books the Martian Navy is supposed to actually be really small, it's just bleeding edge in terms of how advanced it's ships and equipment are, they don't have the endless manpower of Earth so they make up for it with newer, better ships and superior training.
By comparison the United Nations Navy is massive but full of obsolete or aging ships and almost like an alternative to the universal welfare most Earth citizens live on, so it's crews aren't great.
One of the things I liked about the series was that there ISN'T a Spess Nazis faction, it's not 'Liberal, egalitarian and morally pure Faction' vs 'Evil, oppressive, backwards, racist, morally bankrupt Faction'. All the factions are pretty liberal by modern standards, as the standard of living has increased, social liberalism has as well....and they're still all cunts to each other.
>dat mise-en-scène
>>64344149
I don't get it, why wouldn't the writers/producers push their agenda when it costs them very little to do so, in fact given social media is dominated by pansy liberals it would seem like the best thing to do no?
>>64346362
I know and societies based with our histories have a right to be suspicious but we learned the hard way between wars..that essentially you lose skills when you disband your professional armies.
So really it is more about cutting army down without losing essential skills and ability and blending that with tech etc, at least in the modern era.
Problem is our history now specifically could be told through various conflicts for nearly 230+ years. It is all we are.
For the short amount of time the North American continent has been westernized, we've fought a lot of wars, skirmishes and other peoples battles. I do not see that going away.
>>64346827
Because Dark Matter is so cheap it makes it ineffective as propaganda?
Just watched the first episode after noticing this thread, and holy shit it is good. I had no idea fucking Syfy were capable of this level of quality. Space exploration, extreme attention to detail in world building, politics, waifus - hitting all the right notes for me here

>>64346272
oh I never saw them as space nazi's but we tend to define fascist traits by shallow, visual things for the most part so it doesn't work in their favor but I thought the scenes in episode 4 were pretty great.
It reminded me a lot of Space Above and Beyond
>>64333166
What annoys me is this :" From writers of Children of Men and Iron Man"
when they say Iron Man, they dont talk about Tony Stark capeshit bonanza but some obscure Isac Asimov's book I never heard of?
If its first thing, why the fuck do they put that name as something positive near one of the most important SF movies of 21ct.?
>>64347199
I'd buy a poster that had that on it. This show needs some badass merch.
Daily reminder that Belters are supreme gentlemen.
>>64347585
Iron Man was popular and performed well.
Just because it didn't meet your exacting artistic standards doesn't change that.
Man, I'd love to be a Martian.
>tfw born a century too early for Mars colonization

But his clothing style is supposed to reflect Earth's, not that of the belt, that's why he gets mocked for it.
>>64347748
As much as I like that he was able to play such a diverse range..that entire arc really ruined his character because they didn't give him enough time to redeem himself

>>64347756
Literally a belter. I'm surprised she hasn't been crushed by gravity yet.
>>64347755
I liked in the book where a hardened Martian marine has a minor panic attack the first time she steps outside of a building on Earth because she's never been in such a wide open space without a suit.
They did a good job of making it really realistic for a sci-fi story, from the technology to the people, and I'm glad the series seems to be sticking to that.
>>64347832
>imagine if shes made pregnant
She'd probably miscarry before she even realised it because of how malnourished she is.
Best character.
>>64348069
That voice, mang...
Science Fiction is my favorite. Read all the books, pretty pretty good but gets too fantastical and outside of science a lot later on. Show so far doesn't disappoint. EXCEPT
>Star Trek tier gun fights.
Was so disappointed in I think episode 4, when we see the first combat. They just start shooting down a hall from behind cover. That's the elite martian marine's top tactics? Come on. Super cheap and cheesy.
>Velcro on 'Power Armor'
In the books it is described as one-man-army functionally, and it plays a major part in a few plot points much later. I'm hoping the marines we saw weren't actually wearing it, and they're saving the reveal for later.
>Slow mo action scenes
Just the worst. Not only slow motion, but just slow and weird. Terrible choice for this. Should be fast, and high stakes.
>Space Flight
Pretty good about the floating and one G under burn. But while in combat you get no sense anything is happening. Just people sitting in computer chairs. Could have had a scene where the klaxons sound, people scramble to get into their crash couches, but one grunt didn't get strapped in in time, his comrades watch his body bounce and goofy around the room as the pilot frantically tries to evade. I think the writers are sticking too closely to the book. But somethings are easily explained in text, so the show writers need to get more creative to show the viewers the stakes and what's going on. People sitting on computer chairs is just lazy.
Some of the world-building is really great though. Like the feel of the station, the feel of earth. The metro map on Ceres really stood out as a great detail that really grabs your imagination. I also love they just drop you into the world, and let the audience learn on their own.
>>64347806
>ruined his character
You remember when they locked G'Kar in a cell for three episodes and he came out a completely different guy than when he went in? Watch the show again and reassess how they handled Garibaldi.
>>64347756
god damn, i was eating over here...
why the fuck do you think i have left everything and end up here... /tv/, so i could eat at peace and read what people think about things they watched i don't know how to think to watch should i watch it or to just think(and if is it possible to eat while watching that)
>>64338398
It is boring as hell. I couldn't make it into 2nd episode. But opinions man
>>64348270
No I agree on G'Kar but I think his mind rape of Lando came after that when he learned the truth?
My second point wasn't the arc itself but the reward for the arc seemed short and retroactively made it felt rushed maybe?
In terms of those two arcs relative to their characters, you're right though
>>64348233
Not bad points, except you're being super pedantic on the fourth one. They were all strapped in and still had gravity until they had to cut the engines, so your "bouncing around helplessly in zero-G" notion is just you not paying attention to detail.
>>64348233

>>64348470
I'm sorry but it seems it was Mars that got its shit pushed in not Earth.
Earth = home of humanity, freedom, justice and the American dream
Mars = a barren wasteland full space commies
>>64348460
No fucking shit. But is it some boring ass political nonsense between Mars/Earth or actually some interesting sci-fi element?
>>64348233
>I'm hoping the marines we saw weren't actually wearing it
In the books you have the basic, unpowered armour which is similar to what those marines were wearing episode four, and that's the normal sort of 'armoured space suit' marines normally wear and they have a few suits of on the Rocinante, then you have the marine 'recon' armour which is the powered armour that Bobbie Draper wears and is restricted to special forces.
Whether their budget will allow it in the show, I don't know.
>>64337692
Magician books are garbage.
>>64348567
We ain't telling you. Suffer and wait with the rest of us.
>>64348550
In the books Mars is an entire society united under a common goal. Ambitious, Dedicated, Technologically superior, arguably militarily superior too. Earth is a decaying, rotten welfare state. But things change a lot through the course of the books

>>64348694
Lopez better not die, he's fucking great.
Anyone read the books? What do you think of the last few? I'm pretty worried about where they're going with it with the new characters and the fantastical parts.
>>64348550
Actually it's;
Earth = Corrupt and massively overpopulated, where 99.9999% of the population live on welfare and you need to do years of voluntary work before the government will allow you to get a decent education. Has a huge but out-of-date navy crewed by people just wanting to get better welfare/off Earth.
Mars = Small population but made up of the best and brightest due to anyone with a good education or skillset emigrating from Earth, the entire population works towards the thousand year project of terraforming the planet, live underground in clean, orderly cities and value conformity and duty above all else. Has a small but extremely advanced navy with the largest, most modern ships, but it's unclear if this would be enough to overcome Earth's massive numerical superiority. Martians are universally agoraphobic and adapted to .3 G so they'd be unable to launch a ground war against Earth because their marines would all be unable to walk and couldn't go outside.
>>64348899
>Lopez better not die
>>64349081
>unable to launch a ground war against Earth because their marines would all be unable to walk and couldn't go outside.
And would be swarmed by the sheer number of people there.
noice
>>64349045
I still like them, I would have prefered if they'd kept it more ground and maybe just done a war between the factions but it's still interesting.
It'll be interesting to find out the results of what happened in the last book.
