The problem with the prequels was Lucas was too focused on trying to convey what was happening politically in the most vague way possible, so not only did people still not understand all the when's and why's, but it was boring as shit.
The major characters should have gotten more battles, conflicts and screentime. The political senate and trade stuff was so god awful. So was the massive usage of CGI.

A big issue with Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or any "fantastical" movie is that many people find it hard to relate to the characters. I mean, do any of you know what it's like to live in space? Or be an intergalactic smuggler/bounty hunter?
Making the main characters human automatically makes the characters more relative to the average audience. Imagine a show where two alien species fight the whole time, and no humans were involved AT ALL.
While a few of you might think it's "bold" and "brave", most people will hate it on principle - because they can't relate to a non-human character.
