I understand he was supposed to feel bad about being a dick and care more about people in general; but if you think about it he has probably raped and murdered everyone in the town, and committed further unknown crimes.
Only when he got bored and had enough did he learn the lesson.

The repeating of days made him realise how miserable and pointless his life is as he lived as a sarcastic jerk. The repeating of days only ended when he realised that he cannot live like a selfish jerk, that he should truly think about and care for others. The moral of the movie is basically this - if you're a selfish jerk, your days will just cycle over and over and you won't get any where in life, but if you think about others and really care for them, every day will be special and unique, and you will have a happy, non-monotanous life.
