If you want to get mindfucked consider that Dark City came out just one year before the Matrix.

It feels like a 99 movie to me with its heavy use of cgi and all, movies like Alien Resurrection are weirder because they still use lots of practical effects despite the fact they were late 90s films making them feel older.
