What I really meant by "classics" was movies that attempted to become the next LotR or Harry Potter but failed miserably.

There is still time, I reread it recently and the writing still holds up. If anything, it's more enjoyable reading it as an adult. Despite it being a "Young Adult" series, it's mostly only the length that really adheres to that.

It's true they softened it a lot, but there is literally no getting around it, especially if they planned on finishing up the series. They avoided it all in the first, but vaguely hinted at it. They knew they had to do it eventually, but they delayed the inevitable by sweeping it under the rug. I really don't know what they thought they were going to do. You can't avoid those themes in the book.
