>"The Lateness of the Hour" was one of six Twilight Zone episodes shot on videotape instead of film in an attempt to cut costs. By November 1960, The Twilight Zone's season-two had already broadcast five episodes and finished filming sixteen. However, at a cost of about $65,000 per episode, the show was exceeding its budget. As a result, six consecutive episodes were videotaped at CBS Television City and eventually transferred to 16-millimeter film ["kinescoped"] for syndicated rebroadcasts. Total savings on editing and cinematography amounted to around $30,000 for all six entries, not enough to justify the loss of depth of visual perspective, which made the shows look like stage-bound live TV dramas (e.g. Playhouse 90, also produced at CBS). The experiment was deemed a failure and never attempted again

You know why the remakes of TZ fail? It's because they keep trying to update it to the modern era. IMHO the best way to do redo the show would be to do it as a retro black and white anthology. What do I mean by "retro"? Make it look and feel as though it were made circa 1959. Alien's use flying saucers. Human use rocket ships. You get the idea? Focus on the fear of the unknown and the human condition. The problem with the Twilight Zone movie was that they went for flash rather than drama. I can't believe no one has used this idea for a new weekly TZ TV series. With CGI being what it is today, you could do virtually anything on a TV budget, especially if it were done in black and white and kept simple!!!FACT!!!

>>

>>
>>64335212
I agree that TZ remakes don't work for a lot of reasons but if they tried to make it all look like the 50s then they might as well just show reruns of the original. There's no point in trying if they aren't going to try to update the material in some way.

For one thing, the original series had a stellar team of creative and inventive writers. The original had Serling, Matheson, Beaumont, Houghton, etc. and on that level it just won't be replicated. It had a plethora of legendary actors and actresses going for it. It had an amazing soundtrack/score. The black and white aspect added so much to the atmosphere, which is another important point. The original series had such a comfy feeling to it, even in its scariest darkest episodes, and it's difficult to overstate how important that is.

One last thing that reboots always get wrong: they try to make the show too spooky. Most of the original series wasn't horror themed campfire stories. They were mostly fantasy and mystery based. I think that makes the series go a lot further.

Sort of like episodes of Mad Men, set in the past with attention paid to details, and a decent story told every episode? I'd watch that. Nobody else would, and it'd be replaced with a cheap reality show about drunk rednecks fucking each other and getting into fistfights, but I'd watch the half season they managed to put out and probably enjoy it.
