No it isn't. Any good sequel let's you hop in without needing to watch the previous movie and TFA is no exception. Yeah the movie assumes you watched the OT with how the characters interact and how they reveal the old characters and motiffs, but it's not necessary.

it's sad that Star Wars became what it did. A New Hope was a poor movie with an incredible aesthetic style that, on its own, would have survived as a neat movie for future generations. Of course that wasn't enough, and now we're going to have, by 2020, 11 star wars live action movies, and shitloads of animated garbage on top of that.
Harry Potter/Marvel/Minions of course never had any capability to be more than garbage though. Star Wars had a shot to be a neat, poorly acted curiosity. Lucas should have moved on and done something else after the first one.
