One of the main themes of the show is about forming families without genetics to tell you who to love or care for (the flashback to the cave/tribe, Guilty Remnant) with the evils of being forced to love people by blood being apparent with situations like Holy Wayne's cult, or John's family who mostly seem to hate one another in some way.
Kevin's family meanwhile comes back together for purpose beyond the stupid "We have to be a family because of our genes" shit. It's also evident in how Tom hates his real father/gets shit faced and then confronts him. Also in how Lorrie was manipulating Tom due to familial loyalty.
Shit, that sort of familial loyalty or obligation almost got the daughter killed in season 1.

The daughter used to be a very sweet and upbeat teenager before the Departing ate her soul up. She's still clinging to some hope for normalcy (being okay) but she's also cynical. She was hoping Nora would be a beacon of hope for a normal life, and she was wrong.
