Sopranos kinda sets a lot of shit up, like the characters and settings, in series 1. There's a lot of self contained meme episodes (ie the jew episode) that are specifically made to pinpoint a point about the characters involved. Hell there's an entire episode in the first series just dedicated to showcasing how flaky Chris is, or how tempermental Tony is. It all builds as the series goes on, but series 1 is definitely the foundation, not the bulk of the series
