It's super comfy and great fun after a series of dullness.
I advise you to watch it while you are drunk. Moffat himself must have been drunk whilst writing some parts of the script.

It's in the top three of moffat's christmas specials. I don't think anyone would dispute that. I enjoyed it despite the "cuckolding" subtext. It was fun and capaldi was great. Kingston was very tolerable, and it might be her best appearance yet in DW yet.

Nick Briggs does a good Tenth Planet esque Cyberman and did a version of it for Nightmare in Silver before Moffat decided on the voice we have now.

>>64309646
Put the 'men' back into them. The more you remind the audience that they start as people, the more their inhumanity rings out as weird and unsettling. This goes for design, story and characterisation.

And since they're meant to be a dark mirror of humanity, find something to mirror with each story. Moff was onto something with the afterlife/shambling corpses idea but there's limitless potential. I like the thought of class war Cybermen personally.
>>
>>64310088
>did a version of it for Nightmare in Silver before Moffat decided on the voice we have now.
The "new" voice isn't awful, it's an improvement on the previous era's voice. It sounds pretty good in lego dimensions. A little "deep" though.

The only good episodes in the last four seasons were Day of the Doctor, Time Heist, and Heaven Sent. The show's writing turned to shit. I didn't think there could ever be as bad a Mary Sue as River, but along comes Clara. She's stolen every inch of spotlight for years and Moffat didn't even have the balls to kill her off for real because he's clearly in love with her. Then there's Missy, the single most grating villain since fucking Sil. How does the show have better scripts again? Is it the hamfisted highlighting of lesbians and gender swapping? The complete lack of any lasting consequences for anything? The cringey flirting? The female characters who are all basically remixes of Irene Addler, because Moffat only knows how to write one kind of woman? Fill me in here.
>>
>>64310179
At the end of the day, BF is not going to be as passionate and radical as it was back when it was the forefront of material for an unjustly cancelled show. You still get great stuff whenever a writer decides to push themselves for the hell of it (the CCs were wonderful for fostering this), but as a whole it's not a franchise that feels the need to be cutting edge and crazy in the way the best runs of nuwho try to. I liked back when they did insane huge arcs with McCoy but my god did those last few Hector stories blow.
I'm excited for what Dorney and maybe Fitton do with Hurt, and I've already bought the river box after the good reviews, but I'm very cautious about what could end up being a lame attempt to 'authentically' reproduce the Donna era.
>>
>>64310886
>forgetting motoe/flatline
>>
>>64310820
The last few Hector stories weren't awful, but the amnesia got a little old especially after seeing 8 lose his memory so many times. They could have ended Hector's story after Gods and Monsters and I'd have been happy. Ace is still fucking great though.

At this point I trust BF more than BBC, even though they've been feeling sort of "safe" lately. I'd love to see them go back to doing really out there stories like divergent universe or Jubilee.
>>
>>64310940
Husbands of River song was one of the worst episodes of NuWho. It's barely saved from being the absolute bottom of the barrel because it literally can't get any worse than Fear Her or the S8 episode with the fucking trees.

It's a real shame. Divergent Universe had some fantastic episodes and 8/Charlie/C'Rizz had a great dynamic. One of the best Tardis teams.

I feel like 7 has gotten most of the better audios lately. It was nice to see 6 wrapping up Peri's loose ends, even if Widow's Assassin got a little weird. Dark Eyes was consistently good, even if DE4 was weaker than the others.

Moffat confirmed there's an episode set in ancient times and this thing got out sometime earlier this month, before he confirmed:

>Rush Hour by Steven Moffat
>Twenty Leagues In the Sky by Sarah Dollard
>Welcome to Telos by Mark Gatiss
>The Amphora of Time by Jamie Mathieson
>Speed Demon by Debbie Moon
>In Which We Meet The Doctor by Steven Moffat

IT'S HAPPENING
>>
>>64310738
>She's stolen every inch of spotlight for years
she's one of the main characters, she kind of has to be in the spotlight. I think the trouble with Doctor Who is that there are only two main characters, so if you dislike only a single character you are already annoyed with half the cast. Other shows don't suffer from this, there's always somebody else to overshadow them.

I actually think that Davison got a lot of the best audios recently, which is strange because he's been the least interesting BF Doctor to me for a long time. But in the last few years we've had Prisoners of Fate, Fanfare for the Common Men, Psychodrome, Iterations of I, Equilibrium, The Entropy Plague and The Secret History, all among the best of each year imo.
>>
>>64312283
>season 7 and season 8
Moffat didn't even write Season 7 and Season 8.

>>
>>64312085
You can't just pile up characters without giving the an ecological niche. Right now we got capable weirdo and everyman setup, but what are more people going to do? How will you arrange them with things to do.

It doesn't really have place for action, all slots are already taken essentially by the Doctor, so where are you going to place next? Let's not forget the fact that important part of the show is to have large guest cast.
>>
>>64312253
>"If you don't agree with me, its bullshit"
>>
>>64312114
back then the show was entirely different though, the focus was on adventures and nobody gave a shit about characterisation. You don't need three different characters who do nothing but say
>where are we Doctor
>what are we doing Doctor
>help me, Doctor, a monster is approaching me very slowly

However, these days the focus is on character arcs and the adventures are more of a side-thing. That's why I really liked Series 1, beyond Rose and her Doctor-story you still had Adam, Jack, Jacky and Mickey with their respective stories.

Is the Doctor a Mary Sue?

>has always been smarter than everyone around him, we never see a time when he was less educated or skilled at anything

>solutions come to him with little to no effort

>suddenly has knowledge and abilities that are convenient for the plot despite never having foreshadowed that knowledge or skill

>is able to solve unsolvable problems with his Sonic Lampshade (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LampshadeHanging)

>is always perfect, even when they try to make him seem flawed it's done in the most endearing, forgivable, or justifiable way possible so no one in the audience would be under threat of disagreeing with the Doctor's decisions

>even times when the Doctor was known to have done bad or questionable things it's retconned with little to no explanation as to how that even worked (e.g., ending the Time War in Day of the Doctor without a single lost Gallifreyan life at the hand of the Doctor)

So, what of it, /who/? Seriously: Is the Doctor a Mary Sue?

fuckin' star wars

while its true that the point of his character is it be a know-it-all and it properly gets too much some times, he isn't really

>the reputation is earned, its from 35 series of television, plus other stuff
>he's not always in control and isn't always right (although that's become more frequent in Moffat era). Thats why I think a superfan shouldn't be the next showrunner
>The sonic should be depowered really, just keep it as a scanner and a lock pick
>he does have major flaws, being egotistical, being forgetful and haphazard.
>>
>>64320622
>>the reputation is earned, its from 35 series of television, plus other stuff

But even in his first appearance he has that same reputation. We never see him actually earn that aside from just demonstrating his incredible knowledge and intellect that he already had. We don't see him work to learn these things, he just knows them.
>>
>>64320723
I was talking about how others respond to him.

Thats what I like about the earlier doctors, they feel like a smaller part of a bigger universe instead of its greatest being.
>>
>>64320427
None of it is definitive of Mary Sue and well within parameters of a typical protagonist. People really should stop using the term.
>>
>>64320589
>not just clicking "post a reply"

Not really. He was a troublemaker, a little cowardly, and even a little menacing to the original protagonists (Ian and Barbara.) And he definitely has flaws.

Nothing was retconed in Day of the Doctor. He just didn't know that Gallifrey was still out there
>>
Reminder

>Christopher Eccleston trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama
>Its prominent alumni include Laurence Olivier and Harold Pinter amongst others

>Tennant's talent at this young age was spotted by Scottish actress Edith MacArthur. After seeing young David's first performance at age 11, she told his parents he would become a successful stage actor. Tennant also attended Saturday classes at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama; at 16, he passed an audition for the Academy, one of their youngest students, and studied there between the ages of 17 and 20
>He developed his career in the British theatre, frequently performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company

>Peter Capaldi trained at the Glasgow School of Art
>Notable alumni include Robbie Coltrane and Alexander Mackendrick
>In 1995, he won an Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film for his film Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life

>After a serious back injury ruined Smith's football career, his drama teacher introduced him to acting by signing him up as the tenth juror in an adaptation of Twelve Angry Men without his consent. Although he took part in the play, he refused to attend a drama festival for which his teacher had also signed him up, as he saw himself as a football player and did not view acting as socially acceptable
>Smith studied drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia
>Seeked an agreement with the University so that he could graduate without attending lectures in his final year
>>

I was just watching Night of the Doctor again on a lark and I never noticed this bit: https://youtu.be/-U3jrS-uhuo?t=5m32s

>Charley... C'rizz, Lucie, Tamsin, Molly... Friends, companions I've known, I salute you.

I hadn't listened to Big Finish before, so I didn't notice him listing the audio companions originally. So, Big Finish is officially, indisputably canon now, isn't it? Or at least 8's audios are.
>>
>>64321213
That's still not a retcon
>>
>>64321429

Ten actually said something to the effect of, "I watched all of Gallifrey burn by my hand." If anyone remembers or can find the actual quote that would be lovely, but the point is that the Doctor actually mentioned SEEING the effects of the weapon he unleashed. So it's definitely a retcon for him to never have even used the weapon nor to even have memories of himself ending the Time War, because he clearly did remember it at one point.

so the flash of light before the Raven gets her is the time extraction taking place? there was no light when the other guy who got killed by the Raven
>>
>>64321413
It's canon, but they would have far fewer qualms about outright retconning that stuff if they felt it got in the way in the future.
>>
>>64321413
Yes.
His adventures with Mary Shelley are also canon since she was mentioned in Neverland.
And the books and comics are also canon since Compassion and Destrii were mentioned in Mary's Story.
Therefore, Night of the Doctor indirectly made pretty much all of Eight's stories in every medium canon.
>>
>>64321556
You might be thinking of 9's "I watched it happen, I made it happen!" line. Though in Day of the Doctor 10 and 11 say this to the General about Gallifrey:

>DOCTOR: Because the alternative is burning.

>DOCTOR 10: And I've seen that.

>DOCTOR: And I never want to see it again.

>>
>>64322801
Uh yeah we do

>BBC Three today announces Class - a new 8 x 45 minute Doctor Who spin off from the acclaimed YA author, Patrick Ness. Class is a YA series set in contemporary London. Incredible dangers are breaking through the walls of time and space, and with darkness coming, London is unprotected. With all the action, heart and adrenalin of the best YA fiction (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Hunger Games), this is Coal Hill School and Doctor Who like you’ve never seen them before.

>Steven Moffat says, “No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we're bringing his brilliant story-telling into Doctor Who. This is growing up in modern Britain - but with monsters!”

>On his first television series, writer Patrick Ness says, "I'm astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself. There's so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy. I can't wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels."

About the same as yours, I think. Except Davros never returned. Series 8 was about Daleks and Davros. Missy is the main enemy. Also, Heaven Sent is an episode about the Doctor going back in time to relive every adventure he's had since he's left the Time War. Missy says she's manipulated everything since the Time War to get him here at this moment. The price to pay to break free is lose Clara, because they're the hybrid. The Doctor decides to lose her but forgets her instead of having her killed. Missy escapes in a shuttle. Clara returns to her life. The Doctor meets his new companion, River Song, at Christmas. She's a mysterious woman who comes from his future! She dies but the Doctor sets off to meet her again as apparently they meet out of order.

Shit, I never realized that, but you're right. All we need is Capaldi to leave after his third and we'll have a bona fide pattern of every Doctor in NuWho leaving after 3 series except Eccleston. I hope it doesn't become a rule among the Doctor Who staff, though. It'd be a shame if it became THAT predictable.
