It's a space opera. Literally. George Lucas manages to get millions of people interested in watching a Goethe play by setting it in space and using familiar characters, imagery, and music.
Along similar lines, The Force Awakens gets to play with the exact same imagery, characters, and music, but doesn't have anything interesting that it wants to say or do, which is why people are saying "at least George Lucas tried".
Like it or hate it, though, the existence of TFA relieves Revenge of the Sith the unsurmountable expectations that being The Very Last Star Wars Movie Of All Time Ever previously burdened it with, and you get to enjoy it of its own accord. It stands up on its own quite nicely and hasn't aged much. I'm convinced it's as good as any one of the original trilogy.
