Man arrested for not returning Freddy Got Fingered VHS tape 14 years later
Even Tom Green had trouble believing this one:A North Carolina was arrested Tuesday for failing to return a VHS rental of Freddy Got Fingered, the 2001 comedy starring Green as an unemployed cartoonist who uses crass means to continue living offhis parents.
James Meyers, Jr.,of Concord, North Carolina, had been pulled over for a busted tail light when the police officer ran his license plate and realized there was a warrant out for Meyer’s arrest over the VHS tape. The warrant, issuedFebruary 2002 by J&J Video, a store in Salisbury, North Carolina, charged Meyers with the failure to return hired property, a misdemeanor.

“I thought he was joking,” Meyers told WSOC news, adding that he felt surprised when the arrest was carried out. “For the first time I got put in handcuffs… They’re not focusing on the crimes I think they should be focusing on.” Plus, J&J Video had closed in the years since he rentedFreddy Got Fingered, and he says hecan barely recall renting the film in the first place.
The Concord Police Department later released a press statement Thursday afternoon, explaining,”The warrant, which is signed by a magistrate, directs law enforcement officials to arrest a person and take them before a judicial official without unnecessary delay to answer to the charges. In lieu of arresting Meyers on the scene of the traffic stop, the officer allowed Meyers to arrange a time to come to the Concord Police Department to be served with the arrest warrant… Officers are required by policy to handcuff anyone in custody prior to entering the secured area inside of the magistrate’s office.”
In a tweet, Green expressed his confusion over the delayed arrest:
