None of this lets stand tall and kiss among a massive amalgamation of concrete and death and pretend like this was a happy ending. I mean that's what they were trying to do anyways right? Have Lois Lane still run up to him and try to kiss him and shit but have him completely blocking her out mentally and then leaving without reacting to her. Have him desperately fly over Metropolis using his x-ray vision to rescue survivors while becoming more and more desperate as he really sees what the cost has been. Cut the shitty scene of superman talking to the general and replace it with something like him back on on the Kent farm with his mom and she says something inspirational to him. It'd set up the batman vs superman movie better than where they left it and it'd make more sense with the rest of the movie considering where they seemed to be trying to go.

Reasonably speaking this was his only option. They don't know/have the technology to start using stuff to drain Zod's powers and keep him contained. The only stuff for pushing shit into the Phantom Zone was just pushed into it already. And Zod isn't going to be talked down.
