Those ratings will stand, anon. They aren't going anywhere. It must be tiring for you with all these mental gymnastics.
>>
People loved it immediately after it came out. Many couldn't accept the fact it was bad, TFA had a similar effect on me. You go to the movies with a group of people, you don't want to be "that guy" so you say, "it was good, I guess." Over the course of the next few days the rage enlarges within you and you find yourself looking for a place to shitpost your hate and ironic love for the prequels, then you realise the meme site you visit has a board for movies, so you decided it's time for a visit.
>>
>>64252911
People did love it -- largely because their hype got in the way of looking at it critically.

Eitherway, it was a fun time to be around.
>>
It took me a few hours to feel bad about Ep. 1 and a day or two to hate it. Ep. 7 I still feel all cozy about. ANH Redux is better than Jar Jar stepping in "icky poo" forever.
>>
>>64254346
But they never do you fuckwit. I can tell you now Matrix Reloaded was in the 90's when it released.

This new meme is one of my favorites. The movie was pretty well panned when it came out. Not as bad as Attack of the Clones was, but it wasn't pretty at all for a Star Wars movie. You younglings really have no clue what you're talking about and are just repeating a meme created by autists.

Only Star Wars turbonerds loved the phantom menace when it came out. I'm talking the kind of guys who dressed up costumes and stood in line for hours to see it. Normal people fucking hated the movie and people legitimately thought and still think Jar Jar is the worst character ever made

Confirmed to be too young to remember anything about the movie. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who saw the movie who didn't have an opinion on him. If Jar Jar was received well his character wouldn't have been thrown into the background so readily.

The comparisons aren't appropriate. First, look at the reviews. Counting release reviews, The Phantom Menace got like a 60% on RT, while TFA has a 94%. It's a much better received film. Second, as someone who went and remembers opening night for both movies, the audience reactions to the films themselves couldn't be more different. People were laughing and cheering throughout TFA, while the cinema was almost completely silent during TPM after the opening crawl.

People cheered when Rey forced grabbed the lightsaber. People cheered the actions of a new character in a Star Wars film. When the fuck was the last time that happened?

It was trashed by critics. Kermode talks about how deflated everyone was at his screening of the film when it came out.

Haahahahahah holy shit /tv/ is trying to hard with this revisionist history. You weren't even old enough to have been to the premiere for the phantom menace. Just shut the fuck up.
>>
>>64254370
Yep pretty much the same with me, I actually got fucking disguisted looks when I eventually came out and said the movie was basically mediocre at best with fucking terrible pacing and writing and characterization.

One of my friends even went with the "Well you thought Rogue Nation was good" like that's a fucking argument considering RN was an incredibly well done 60s/70s style cheesy spy flick that was consistent within itself while Star Wars basically has to rely on flat characters and nostalgia and a main character who is made so mary sue and everything she does only exists to drive the plot forward its actually immersion breaking.

The opposite happened with me. I went expecting a shitshow and when the credits rolled, anger I'd had since attack of the clones receded. I didn't even realize I had been angry for 14 years until that anger was gone.

So unless episode 8 (along with the 30 sequels) is prequel tier, disney will have my eternal thanks for ending the nightmare that was george lucas with creative control.

You made the assertion so prove it. Most reactions are darth vader, luke, leia, han, c3PO and that video proves it. Not the new characters. No one but kids gave a shit about the new characters.
>>
>>64257494

There's no denying the hype surrounding one of the most popular franchises of all time getting a new release around the time of the phantom menace. But when spastics like you straight up make up shit like people loving Jar Jar and the movie being well received as facts you are going too far with your revisionist history.
>>
>>64257427
I mean Jesus people liked BB-8 more than the new characters.
>>
>>64257453
Actually >>64257223 pegged it exactly. I was 16 in 1999. I left TPM unsure hoping lucas was going somewhere. AotC revealed he wasn't.

But, yes, children loved the prequels. Kids will love anything. The problem is the movies weren't marketed as children's movies. They were marketed as all-ages movies by virtue of being star wars. The problem is lucas has the mind of a child, and not in a good way unless being regulated by others.
>>
>>64257589
>Using my word against me

>people loved Jar Jar

Never said that. kids did. they thought he was funny. But nobody minded him until faggots like you started this whole "jar jar is abomination fuck the prequels" garbage. and yes on the days it was released people liked TPM. Hell, right now people are beginning to dislike TFA more and more. Even my dad was like this shit was a rehash and he is a casual.
>>
>>64257268
>the most boring fucking MI ever made

2 and 3 exist. Rogue Nation is a fantastic action movie and probably one of the best action movies in the past couple years.

Also another point, yes Ethan Hunt is a mary sue, but he is consistent within Mission Impossible's universe, he's part of an agency of the worlds best super spies and the movie plays up his mary-sueness to corny extreme levels and actually flat out makes jokes about it (HE IS DESTINY MANIFEST!). Everything in RN is consistent and well done and it does a fantastic job of basically stealing the thunder from the James Bond franchise. (especially the final scene with this music score https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ieoZQIXwyU )

Ethan Hunt or IMF's stupid magic technology does not break suspension of disbelief because it's all played for what it is and consistent within the world they have built.

TFA isn't only not even consistent with established Star Wars lore, it's not even consistent within it's own movie, characters are rushed around without any time to develop, Rey is as flat as a board and yet is perfect at everything for no reason, basically every beat is ripped 1:1 from A New Hope.

The Force Unleashed is just capeshit with a Star Wars skin.

>>64258266

Did you really just try and say that the prequel series had a serious tone? The movies where one had a bumbling jamaican, reptillian duck as a main character? Yea, your dad must be retarded because he's passed it on to you

See, you can tell you're just trying to act how you think /tv/ would approve because he wasn't terribly acted at all.
>>
>>64258416
Oh yes I can see the sadness when he mentions them. Except he never does. When Ben dies, he sits there like a lumpy little shit while Leia comforts him. he never once mentions the death of his aunt and uncle as a driving force. But the death of Ben was certainly a driving force.
>>
>>64258423
His lines were worse than if GL had written them and he is just badly acted. Sorry you can't recognize that. It's okay though pal.

Your concession is noted.
>>
>>64258396

Compared the prequels i would say they do indeed have a more serious tone. The villains actually have weight to their prescence. None of the prequel villains did besides maybe Maul, Greivous was turned into a joke, Sidious was corny as hell in the prequels.

The originals also don't have their scenes ruined relying on CGI making the films seem like a video game.

You could argue the plot is far more simplistic in the OT but that's in itself not necessarily a negative.

Face it kid, your dad just might be retarded or might've just straight up never watched the originals because he didn't have some autistic nerd to take to see them when they came out.

You're really only saying he prefers RotS over RotJ. Which isn't completely outside the realm of possiblity.

But saying he prefers the prequels, as a whole, to the OT is saying he likes jarjar, found AotC engaging, and liked anakin's character arc. Which is why people are having so much trouble understanding.
>>
>>64258826

Do you understand the difference between plot and tone?
>>
>>64258938
he prefers ROTS over ROTJ. He will not watch the cheesy padme bullshit just like he won't watch han and leia bullshit but he will watch geonosis over most shit in the OT outside of the fight on bespin. Like I said he could give a rats ass about star wars as do most men that lived through Clint east wood's heyday and shit but he can't stand the OT for the most part. My dad reaction to star wars is like red's in that 70s show. He thought the lasers and lightsabers were decent at the time but he hates how campy that shit is.

>meanwhile in ROTS anakin plays with butterflies and does not deal with his descent into the dark side

>Han and Leia bullshit

How are Anakin and Padme comparable to Han and Leia? Han and Leia is pretty goddamn comfy and realistic. It's not shoved in at scenes it doesn't belong in, and it's pretty emotionally powerful in ESB, while Anakin and Padme is just mushy shit for like, literally an hour. Watching these two cardboard characters fall in love for no reason. No hint, no growth, no turmoil, just mushy Valentines Day bullshit.

If Han Solo killed a bunch if sand people, including women and children, how would Leia react? To be angry is to be human? Wear some more provocative clothing?

I love the prequels to death became of nostalgia but your dad must be retarded or something. Han and Leia is some of the best sci fi romance
>>
>>64259900

anon please. and killing sand people would be like killing somalian pirates. It's all good.

No. I sincerely hope you watch other movies anon if you think this has the best love story in sci-fi. Truth be told, me and my 2nd grade girlfriend did the same thing. We insulted each other and I sent her a note that said "do you like scroundels, yes or no? circle one"

Yeah, but Anakin didn't just do that. He ransacked the entire village. He killed the women and children, who obviously didn't have a say in the matter.

Also, ever heard of tsundere?

I prefer cliche to "omg I love you so much. Oh I love you too *playfully bites neck*"

I thought I was on some emo 12 year old girls deviantart account.

Also, tsundere was much less common at the time. It was also done in a way in which both characters were kind of tsundere, which 's kind of interesting.

nah that shit was forbidden and sexy.

Leia and Han everybody was just waiting and shit. Overall, both shit but I jerked off to Padme so gucci.

I was fucking pissed. It wasn't shit, but i felt so let down.
I went with my dad, who is a huge star wars fan, and my friends and siblings also watched. Everyone else was praising it, so i just went with the flow, but later i got depressed when i rewatched ROTS and realized it was better and actually a good movie to fit with the original trilogy.

I have never seen a Star Wars fan who bares the resemblance to OP's picture.

It most appears to be normies that make up the fandom.

OP's image seems more relevant to the Doctor Who fandom if anything else.

>Kids who grew up with the prequels are the only people defending them today

I think this is bullshit desu senpai. I was born in 88, so episode 1 came out when i was 11.5. I don't remember if I saw it or not in the theatres. And when I did see it at home I remember being it as fucking boring.

I think the people who defend the prequels (I've never actually met one in real life) who are young have nostalgia instilled in them by their parents love of the originals. So there's this obligation to say they're at least decent. Like they're total shit BUT that lightsaber fight was pretty kickass.

I was in high school when Ep 3 came out though and the other 2 were pretty much universally regarded as boring shit by my peers at the time.
>>
It wasn't until around the time of Clones that the general feeling towards the prequels really sunk in. The thing is that most people don't really attach themselves to the details of these movies, and some of the worse things pass over them and are forgotten about.

People remembered the podracing much more than they remembered the entire Gungan section of the movie. If you were the sort to remember the individual characters you would find people who thought Sebulba was a cool design, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't remember the name of the Gungan king if he had one.

I know that the slow pace/political approach of Ep1 annoyed some people, but that didn't bother me at all. That was how Jedi were supposed to be, more monks than warrior monks (based on the representation of Obi-Wan in ANH.)

Darth Maul wasn't really an interesting character at all but people did remember the fight scene and especially the music.

I didn't really hear any negative feedback about it from the people I knew. I remember a phone call with the biggest Star Wars fan in my group of friends where he liked how everything came full circle (I guess how Anakin blew up the control ship or whatever... not sure I would agree on that.)

But Ep2 definitely hurt the impression of Ep1 retroactively. I think the reason is that it was built in such a way that people -realized- they were shellshocked by all the action of the movie, and so they looked back on the movie to analyze what they missed. And so they remembered the bad things of the movie, faster than they normally would have. Then they started wondering whether Ep1 had the same problems, and the collective mood started to sour.
>>
>>64262603

I should also note that I personally still don't mind Ep1 all that much. I'm not about to buy a Qui-Gon figure (I remember I got one from some carnival game) but I've seen many worse movies, and I appreciate its attempt to do its own thing. Ep2 on the other hand is unwatchable and seems like an overreaction to the call for more action.

>Hype got in the way

This. Everyone on this board who was shocked by the media blitz for TFA either wasn't born or was too young to remember the TPM saturating everything.

TFA had a BIG push behind it but even Disney was aware that everyone older than 15 when TPM came out had a "fool me once" approach to this movie.

I think EP1 is better than EP2, mostly because they had to set up a ton of information and locations for the second one, but then they just squandered everything with EP2.
