Is this movie any good? About to check it out.
Horor movies, Carpenter movies general too.
>>
Worst of the Apocalypse Trilogy but still pretty good.
>>
Yes. More thought provoking than scary.

Blue is my favourite colour

Yes. Applies more to current pop culture than the culture of its day.

It's Lovecraft for people who don't really understand what Lovecraft was all about.

The sense of hopeless despair, paranoia and insanity is supposed to creep in and feel always just out of view, something eerie and wrong that you can never quite put your hand on.

Carpenter just skips right to the gross monsters.

Jacob's Ladder was a better Lovecraft movie and it wasn't even a Lovecraft movie.
>>
yes but not for tripfags

>>64248834
hello reddit!

>Carpenter just skips right to the gross monsters.

That is strange because he did such a good job creating that atmosphere in The Thing.

>>64248880
rude
>>
>>64248968
so you're saying that he failed to create a "horrific" atmosphere in this film?
i think he did a great job inserting an unsettling atmosphere
>>
>>64248834
muh Lovecraft.

He was a hack.

go read your mythos books cuck.
>>
>>64248834
Except that most of Lovecraft's prominent works have the horrible monster right out there in your face, sooner or later.

>>64248834

I like it.

As for >>64248834 They barely have any monsters in it. They don't even show the "monsters" until right at the end (The monster is more the writer) and even then they don't really hang on to them as much. They're there for a few moments, then gone. It's all about atmosphere and suspense.

>The Thing>ITMOM>Prince of Darkness

He went to the despair side of cosmic horror so fast that you were never really drawn enough into the world to feel its loss.

The characters already act like they're in a story where shit's about to get weird instead of acting like normal people dropped into an increasingly bizarre situation.

As a result, you feel like giving up and just enjoying the crash when you should be rooting for the hero even as things get bleaker.

It's supposed to feel like the walls are slowly closing in but Carpenter instead just slaps on spikes and slams them shut without much buildup.

It just becomes "bizarro nightmare world" and so you easily detach yourself when things really go off the rails.
>>
>>64249729
From the moment they approach the town they see a person trying to escape who turns all old and gross.

The weirdness doesn't gradually set in, it doesn't sneak up on you. It basically flashes a sign screaming "SHIT'S GETTING FREAKY YO!!!"

To be fair, I'd wager at least some of it might've been producer meddling.

"People are expecting horror, so get to the fucking horror!"
>>
Apocalypse Trilogy is the best movie trilogy. Fuck Star Wars and LotR.
>>
>>64249729
Prince of darkness is the best solely due to the dream transmission.
>>
>>64250274
I had to watch that 3 times to figure out what the fuck they were saying

So, what Jesus was an alien and that chick was the antichrist or some shit?
>>
>>64250216
>>64250056
Just finished it, that is a pretty fair summation
also
>dat sex scene
>>
>>64250540
Someone from the future is sending them a message in their dreams warning them about satan or whatever. The final scene shows the woman possessed by him emerging from the church, although it's somewhat ambiguous if the evil has actually been unleashed.
>>
It was alright

Not as bad as the detractors say
Not as good as the fanboys say
Some genuinely good moments

i prefer movies like Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Kairo"
>>
>>64248348
This movie is awesome, full of memorable moments.
Dat metal guitar in the end credits will please the edgelord in you
>>
I couldn't help but feel this movie would of been better if it was made later or with some other way of better special effects. It had a lot of great ideas but most of them just came off as goofy.
>>
>>64248386
How is this worse that Prince of Darkness?
>>
>>64248348
I thought it had some good elements but ultimately it's cheesy, feels like one of those cheap movies Steven King directed.

I don't really get what people like about it.
>>
>>64248834
Truly great impression of somebody who has never read Lovecraft

>dat pickman reference
>Town folks turning into monsters and followers of said cult

>Ends up in an asylum

Sound pretty Lovecraft to me
Not ALL lovecraft, since you would need more gods, some fishermen, a couple of people coming back from the dead, more spells, more ancient books, some creepy old uncle that leaves you a mansion on his will, an FBI raid, and so on...
>>
one of carpenter's few good movies amidst all the overrated crap.
>>
>>64248834
It is the best lovecraft movie
And you are the best shitposter in this thread

That vampire movie with James Woods was great cheese.
>>
>>64252815
It had the signature Carpenter atmosphere: cozy and creepy at the same time.
>>
>>64248348

Yes. It's fucking great.
>>
>>64248348
One of my favorite horror movies. I try to watch it every Halloween
>>
>>64248759
it's from John Carpenter's Apocalypse-trilogy that's more theme connected than anything.

The Thing -> Prince of Darkness -> In the Mouth of Madness

if you haven't seen the Thing you should do that immediately since it's one of the best films ever made.
