Eh the "stolen as a child" actually ruined him for me. It would've been so much better if he deliberately joined the Storm Troopers and he thought genuinely thought he'd got a good job there only to then realize the terrors of them.
It also felt like another of his excuses. Yeah his obsession with Rey is stupid, but that's rather a problem with Rey because everyone in this entire fucking movie is obsessed with her.
As I said without Rey, Finn could've gotten pretty good character development. Just replace Rey with some other motivation to redeem himself and actually give him a moment to shine and he'd be pretty much be black Luke.

Honestly, a solid 7/10 all things considered, much more entertaining than that score would suggest too. Didn't personally mind all that was rehashed because it was executed well. Rey was too OP but there was actually a good division of screentime between each of the new lot and I liked Finn, Poe and Ren so it was still totally enjoyable.

And the plot lines couldn't be more different.

I would add though that despite Rey and Finn being great acted with lots of charisma and charm, both characters are underdeveloped and poorly written.
Rey comes off a literally perfect at everything and everyone loves her mary sue to the point of absurdity, there are so many pointless scenes to show off how fucking awesome Rey is it really becomes tedious and immersion breaking. Also Rey's use of the force basically breaks all consistency with the force in Star Wars.
Finn would have been a better character if the pacing was so rushed, one minute he is "Oh woe the world" after watching his friend die, then what we can assume is 3-4 hours later he is mass murdering all his comrades in a hanger shouting "WHOOP WHOOP, NOW THIS IS PODRACING!", also he like decides to abandon everything he has ever known and his entire identity over 3-4 hours.
Also one more thing to note, the films pacing is absurdly fast, I'm pretty sure the film starts around 8/9pm at night in the village, Poe and Finn crash sometime in the early morning, Finn reaches the town midday some time then they blow up the Death Star at some point that night.

TPM's plot:
Two jedi's go on a diplomatic mission to a planet that's been blockaded. Things go nuts and they end up rescuing the queen of the planet. On their scape ship gets damaged and they need to stop on another planet (which happens to be Tatooine) for pieces. Here the jedi's find a slave boy that's stronk in the force, helps them get the pieces because of his podracing master skills, and they carry the boy with them. Then they all go back to the blockaded planet ('cause damn jew confederates put pressure on the queen), and they'll try to liberate said planet. Kid, mostly by luck, destroys droid control ship, which helps a lot in the battle.

Whether it's acceptable or not is entirely subjective. Obviously some people find it acceptable in the case of the prequels, others find it acceptable in the case of TFA. What matters is how well the original was duplicated and so far critics and audiences agree it was TFA but that might change in time of course.
