It's a pleb version of The Godfather. The guy is just a henchman and his family is trailer trash instead of the sophisticated mob articulating the schemes. I see no reason to see this, and I don't understand why would anyone like this movie, with so much swearing, ugly "realistic" visuals and not a lot of reason or likeable characters.

Just watch The Godfather again instead.
>>
>>64240835

I'm gonna get the tickets
Get the tickets

>so much swearing
That's how they talked in real life.
>ugly "realistic" visuals
The visuals in The Godfather are realistic too.
>not a lot of reason or likeable characters
If you aren't immensely entertained by Tommy DeVito's antics you're a fucking cuck.
>>
>>64241757
The Godfather paints the mafia with too likable an image, they're flawed humans victim to their own sins and vices.
Scorsese's mafia films are far more honest and brutal, they capture the atmosphere better.
>>
I used to try and be contrarian and say it's overrated. Then I got older.
Also, I just watched Casino for the first time last month. It made Goodfellas look like an 11/10 masterpiece. The script to Casino is bizarre, Robert De Niro is THE biggest cuck in a movie I've ever seen, and for no explainable reason.

Scorsese films ranked best to worst:
Taxi Driver>The King of Comedy>Goodfellas>Wolf of Wallstreet>Shutter Island>>>>>>>>>>>EVERYTHING ELSE HE'S EVER EVEN CONSIDERED MAKING>>>>>>>>>Casino
>>
>>64242100
I prefer Casino to Goodfellas

The Godfather is realistic but there's also sophistication in it through and through.

Honestly I see no reason in making a film like Goodfellas...there's nothing to learn from it, be filmmaking-wise or morally-wise. It's entertaining only if you like psychopatic animals yelling and killing each other for no reason.
>>
>>64241757
>>64242006

Not really, the Godfather is just about the upper end of the mafia, so of course it's gonna look more glamorous. Most people don't realize, but Paulie isn't the boss of the family. He's mentioned as the boss of the neighborhood, he's a capo (captain). He lives a pretty good life but he's still below the boss/underboss/consigliere (who are shown in the Godfather). None of them are even soldiers, they are associates so they are the lowest level of the mob.

It's stupid to not like Goodfellas simply because it depicts another culture of the mob.
>>
I'm gonna go get the dubs, get the dubs.
>>
>>64242280
But that is the issue- the mafia was never sophisticated with a set of moral codes ruled by men who had a heart. Goodfellas is a way more accurate portrayal of mafia culture, a bunch of violent greaseballs demanding things.
>>
>>64242280
>there's nothing to learn from it, be filmmaking-wise
You're a fucking moron that doesn't know what he's talking about. Goodfellas has incredible editing that has barely aged.
>>
>>64242280
>if you like psychopathic animals yelling and killing each other for no reason.

you mean realism?
>>
>>64242006
Not him, but that's what makes The Godfather better. I already knew monsters were awful people and not at all admirable, and that's all Goodfellas really has to say. The Godfather has more complex themes of family vs self, masculinity, father son relationships, corruption, losing the old way of life etc, as well as a great gangster story. Goodfellas is 3 hours of loud assholes harassing people and being proud of it, and at the end he's sad that he can't be a jerk anymore. It's completely empty
>>
>>64242006
Did you even watch Goodfellas?
>>
>>64242280
>implying Goodfellas doesn't have any morality
The film is a cautionary tale of how an insatiable lust for power and money ends in tragedy.
>>
>Do you want to watch a gangster movie?
>do you have $5?

If yes, go.

If not, just fucking go anyway. It's only $5.
>>
it's not bad, Casino is better though

>The Godfather has more complex themes of family vs self

yeah, but unfortunately they're all explored via a movie about a bunch of fucking gangsters.

if the Godfather 1&2 were pure family drama they wouldn't have been as popular or highly regarded in popular culture, because there would be no close-ups of people getting shot/garrotted, or rich men being racist to Italians so that the reprisals in the next scene seem justified somehow, etc etc.

Godfather is manipulative in pretty much the same range of ways as a film like Avatar, so far as selectively emphasizing things so we see the main characters as "good" gangsters. even the opening was meant to tap into 70s distrust in authority by making the mafia seem more reliable dispensers of justice than the lawful authorities.

The Godfather is what made Goodfellas and the Sopranos so necessary.

I'm more ok with the Godfathers lie about the mafia when it has something interesting and universal to say than Goodfellas "realistic" power fantasy with a moral tacked on at the end

I think The Sopranos is the perfect mix of the two and trumps both
>>
>>64240835
No. Overrated. Stay home and watch Mean Streets instead.

the moral isn't tacked on in Goodfellas. the first line "as far back as I can remember I wanted to be a gangster" and the whole arc of the narration leads up to the ending.

also it's not really a moral, in the sense that the main characters POV is supposed to be that of the audience and there is no subtext. the point is that he didn't really learn anything and is revealed as being a whiny asshole. it very much leads towards the themes of the Sopranos.

I think the Godfather films are excellent, but I sincerely prefer something like Ordinary People or Ingmar Bergman's realist stuff if I want actual family drama.
