This was easily the hardest thing to watch, no amount of gore, violence, or tension even comes close to this series. After getting into the first few episodes i just had to keep watching, though.

I like Lenny Bruce's position: Better to have a judge if you're innocent; judges are used to sifting through mounds of evidence and correctly applying legal principles such as reasonable doubt etc. Better to have a jury if you're guilty; judges have heard every bullshit story you can come up with a hundred times and more - juries are apt to be more gullible.
I do think the jury system is a joke and have done for many years. They abolished it in India about fifty years ago. I even take some issue with the adversarial representative system as it stands, though I understand its rationale.
