He broke through the programming by using Force.
At the intro scene when he is having the PSTD, the goodness and kindness of the force tells him to do good. The right thing. You can see Kylo noticing this Force awakening in him, ever so slightly, and he remembers noticing it later on when Finn escapes with Poe.
The reason Finn is played as weak and comical failure, is to fool you. He is not only the Jar Jar, he is also the Yoda. As we see Rey falling to the dark side like every trained Jedi in her family did, Finn will raise from the enemy lines to heroism, creating contrast to eachothers. Black to white. White to black.
For Finn is the cure the young independent white women needs to cure herself from her family's dark history. Finn will lead another rescue mission to her, this time as a great man. And as they see eachothers again, you will fondly remember the times they had with Harrison Ford and the kiss she gave to him when they last met.
The original sin of Skywalker's blood legacy will finally be blacked.

He was one of the better characters because he wasn't fucking perfect. He was a self serving coward that wanted to save his own skin. He also had some common sense. I also liked the minor things like being freaked out by chewbacca and not understanding his grunts. I do agree however that he can't be held up as a moral character. Storm troopers are just guys doing their job.

People keep dropping the "sanitation" maymay, too, but he says he was that when he was stationed on the base. Which makes sense. 90% of the "guards" stationed there wouldn't be doing anything but upkeep because physical security would already be taken care of by way of the planetary shield, planet-sphere superiority, and the fact that it's a fucking planet.
