Mary says that the witch's body is completely covered in hair or fur (like a horse). While Mary is saying all of this, she is wearing long sleeves, and it seems that tufts of hair are sticking out by her wrists. Maybe I imagined this, but several others have noted the same thing. Also, Mary comments that the witch's face is strange looking. LOOK AT MARY'S FACE! Faces don't get much weirder than that. Mary's fence and gate are made of sticks, which are tied together not unlike the stickmen that we see later in the film. On top of all this, Mary tells Heather about the piles of stones in the trees. It is as if Mary is slyly revealing that she is the witch. Also--Mary is the only person (that we know of) to have seen the witch and survived. She is definitely responsible for the murders. All of the theories about Josh, Heather and Mike do not hold water--The murders had to have been executed by either someone with incredible intelligence and strength, or someone with supernatural powers.

to me it has the fundamental aspects of what makes movies scary
>nothing you do will help you regardless of rhyme or reason
>even though the witch is a constant threat and presence, you never see it, so you never get to go "oh it's just a ___"

Also, the climax in the house at the end is truly fucked up

>>64225056
That wasn't me that you were yelling at. When I said "the ending was fucked up" I didn't go on and justify it, because I was simply stating an opinion, not trying to initiate an argument.

But if you must know, it's pretty simple. In the beginning they hear all these creepy myths about the witch. Then they find this house and see evidence of those creepy myths.

There is the story for example that she would make one child face the wall while killing the other child. When she comes down and Michael is facing the wall, it obviously confirms this. But what's creepy is that while you could understand a child just listening to a big scary witch's authority and doing as told, Michael should be an adult fleeing/fighting for his life.

These are just a few details, there are a lot more that I think make the scene really detailed and awesome, especially given how minimal and repetitive the rest of the film is.

>>
>>64223235
i never thought this movie was that scary

>>
>>64223430

Yes she did you fuckhead. She didn't have her stuff scouted out ahead of time and made assumptions, which was what allowed the witch to trap them in the Lost Woods Paradox (tm). It is easy for us to scoff at this in the days of Google maps, but y'know, a slightly different era back then --- also magic.

In fairness, the men also made a mistake in placing serious trust in a woman to navigate, but by the time that they correctly wrested navigation from her it was too late, they were already under the spell. This mistake is also made in Alien (1979), when Veronica Cartwright, the ship's navigator for a /spaceship/, /fails to interpret a rudimentary 2-D motion sensor as modelling a 3-D space, and her panicking around this causes Tom Skerrit to be killed/.

>>64223437

Patricia DeCou (who played the crazy lady) also has some art department credit. She was a trooper! I also once worked in a factory alongside a woman who had a similar face. She was a nice gal.

When I was in 5th grade this was the rumor, that Mary Brown was in fact the witch.
Pretty scary stuff.
Also there was a scene that the tent is being shaken in the woods, if you paused it just right on VHS, you can see Mary Brown's face in the outline of the tent.
I mean, they didn't have the budget to pull something like that off.. Or maybe they were just really creative.
It's a good movie.
>>
>>64225267
The ending scene was just about the only semi frightening scene in the whole fucking movie. The tent thing was kinda scary but it just looked like some guy hitting it with his fist.

Another aspect of this movie that did it for me initially was the fact that it was passed on as fact; back then, internet was in its diapers and search engines weren't as good as they are now; i believe IMDB already existed but it was really limited, looking up the actors of the movie usually ended up with geocities pages of them dedicated to either confirm they were actually dead or that it was probably just a hoax. So the filmmakers hinting at this being a real portrayal of a real event and the style of filmmaking really made you uneasy watching it.

Also, I was 14.

Reading the IMBD trivia for this movie is great

>When Heather screams "What the **** is that?!" she is seeing one of the movie crew standing on a hill dressed in white with a ski-mask on. Josh was holding the camera as ran behind her and didn't manage to catch the image on film.

Always wondered what she was looking at after the ran away from the tent when hearing the children.

Must've been scary for them even though they knew they were filming, they didn't know what was going to happen, so seeing shit like that would be scary as hell.
>>
>>64233425
This. Noroi has some shitty CGI babies and they basically steal Blair Witch's script.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tknzqSDYR_s
>>
>>64233494
This is why the movie is good. Even though it was scripted the crew did spooky shit like this to catch them off guard
>>
>>64233494
I remember reading somewhere that the actors were basically given a script then sent off into the woods to fend for themselves which is why they're so convincingly tired and angry with each other. That and crew members followed them around and would fuck with them. I'm sure there's more to it though since they'd have to have been given directions to where the crew had left stick figures and whatnot.

>>
>>64235140

I think there's a strong implication that there might have been some paranormal activity involved throughout the movie, specifically the ending.

So it's open to interpretation, really. Either he was being forced to stand there by some unseen magical force (probably the Blair Witch) or something we weren't privy to broke him psychologically and made him stand there while it killed his friends.

Incidentally, the corner thing matches up with a story heard at the beginning where a man in the 40's who was allegedly possessed by the Blair Witch forced a child to stand in the corner and look away while he butchered the child's friends behind him.
>>
>>64235439
no shit, the house they find is the house of an old hillbilly child murderer who claimed to be possessed by the witch. The house is confirmed his house, and his house burned down long ago.

It is said the witch has powers to distort time, so it seems they must have been in the past or in some form of distorted compressed time.

Could explain why they cant get out of the woods.

Blair Witch is one of the best horror movies of all-time easily. Horrifying every time you watch it. Like other amazing movies it has the intelligence to scare us using primal fears that afflict almost everyone. In this case fear of the dark is the goal. Also fear of being lost and alone. It's a dark, disturbing fucking movie.
>>
>>64227575

"wah why is there no cool CGI-witch? it just looks like someone hitting the tent, wah."

It was pretty spooky.
>>
Give me your top 3 horror movie power ranking.
>>
>>64236482

Pulse (jap version obviously)
The Innocents
The Wicker Man (original)

Blair Witch would be in the top 10 for sure though
>>
>>64236482
Halloween (1979)
Suspiria
Ring (american)
>>
>>64236572

fuck why do I always forget Suspiria? great movie, Argento's best easily. I wish his other movies were as great though he still has a few flicks that are really fun. Suspiria is a masterpiece though.

True, but I always figured the witch was either messing with their sense of direction or even altering the landscape so they'd get more and more lost even though they really didn't hike that far in a heavily populated area of the country.

Movie wasn't scary, but the Witch's powers were really cool. I wish I could do that to people.

So i'm a 32yr old somewhat oldfag. This movie was getting some attention when I was in high school, and my buddy saw it before me. He's a pretty creative dude, so he told me the story of the movie as a campfire story (while we were getting stoned). To someone who knew nothing of it at all, it makes for a perfect campfire story.
People go in woods looking for shit, they joke around and be normal young people, weird stuff starts happening, then finally everything goes crazy, with a bleak and unknown resolution.
Tell the story to your kids / young relatives before they ever know about it, that's the best way to experience this story.

They basically went to the woods and shot for eight days, they had a basic plot outline before shooting but I guess they took their time to piece the shitload of footage that they had into a coherent plot.
>>
>>64227242
>autists have no imagination
what?
>>
>>64253221
ye, they had 19 hours of footage and had to edit that shit into a 90 minute movie
>>
In the movie, Heather and Mike share a somewhat antagonistic attitude towards each other. In the commentary, the directors revealed it was Heather and Joshua who were arguing most of the time (and more heatedly). Almost all of the footage of their arguments was taken from the final cut after the filmmakers decided it seemed like both men were "ganging up" on Heather.
