feels bad 2bh
I remember I was in Ocean City with like 8 or so of my friends once and me and this other girl went to go pick up a movie for all of us to watch. It was like a 20 minute walk and when we got there we realized we forgot to bring the card.
We had our movies picked out and everything. We were so pissed to have come all that way.
The guy (I still remember his name - Darryl) let us sign up a membership so we could rent movies even though we were only like 14 at the time and it wasn't allowed.
I'll never forget you bro.

This one hit me the most. That place was where movies and vidya ruled, where movies and vidya joined people and the surrounding community together. Nowadays, tv and vidya keep people apart, not bring them together. The Internet may have some great uses, but it certainly has its negative sides. For one, it destroyed Blockbuster and how it brought people together.

1980 here
1994 here, Blockbuster started dying when I was about 11, dead by the time I was 15.
>>64221360
I'm glad Blockbuster died. Uptight cunts with their late fees. Hollywood Video was much better.
>>64221360
Nigga I'm 20 and I've never used one.
>>64222650
>Hollywood Video was much better.
this
Mom & pops were better
>>64222715
Did anyone else's Hollywood Video have a chainlink fence around the game area? Shit was cash.
>used to go with divorced dad on weekends to rent games and movies and then watch them
>he ran away when I was 11 or 12
>haven't seen or heard from him since
>>64222715
The Hollywood Video down the road from me closed this weekend. I have no idea how it lasted this long. Now my life and neighbourhood is empty and bare.
It seems like the better technology we get, the more fun it takes out of everything. Convenience isn't always a good thing is what I'm trying to say
>>64223282
I completely agree.
>>64221360
>TFW weekend night and parents take you to rent a game
I remember a time when one had to call the movie theater for show times.
People make fun of millennials ('87 here) but I remember family members using typewriters . I can remember having to rely on phonebooks to do basic things like order a pizza or find a restaurant. I can also remember life before the PC, the cellphone, and the internet were a common thing.
Hell, it was a big deal to watch MST3K on The Comedy Channel on cable back in the day, or to have cable.
My whole point is that time period while I was child to about the time 90s ended had a certain unbroken continuity with every other period past. Sure, the milk man may have gone, but people called theaters for showtimes I'm sure in the 50s or they opened a local newspaper to see those showtimes.
I think technology has effectively alienated more people than it's brought together.
>>64223648
The rise of the Internet happened as I grew up. As the Internet, computer use, and cellphone capabilities grew, and I with them, I noticed how evermore detached and alienated people had become. Now I'm haunted by the memory of a lost paradise that I barely remember.

anyone remember having to rent the suitcase vcr?
they will never jack off in the adult room all over the boxes and then run out laughing at the thought of the fat neck beard behind the counter having to clean it up
22 yo brazilfag
We didn't have blockbuster but video rentals died out around 2005 when people learned they could pirate everything online.
>>64226681
>tfw played almost the entire N64 worth games library by renting
>saving vouchers so you rent 2 for 1 games or videos every friday afternoon
>playing sega and/or nintendo on those kiosk things where the controllers are attached
>walking past the horror section and getting freaked out by some of the messed up covers
>sun faded video boxes and spines
>that distinct video store smell of plastic and popcorn
>lingering as you past the adult section
>never paying late fees even though they ask every time you rent
>"staff pics" sections where you'd gauge how cool the employees were by their faves
>>64226873
>his mom didn't let him play M-rated games when he was a kid
>>64221360
>tfw used to rent games using names and addresses of classmates

I miss the old rental stores, torrenting shot just isnt the same feel

Dude, they only closed like 3-4 years ago, stop acting like it was ages ago.
only 90s kids remember dis, upvote if u agree
'95 here but grew up with '85 and '87 sisters so we used Video Ezy (Blockbuster was too far). I always used to get some kid centric film like Pokemon or I'd get some N64 games like Mario Party, Mario Kart, Pokemon Snap. We still have a $200 fine for the Video Ezy place near us that closed down haha.
>>64221503
86 right here. I was always more of a family video kinda guy.
>Called family video but they have a huge collection of porn stashed in the back section for neck beards everywhere.

I worked a year at the last rental place in town a year or so ago
It's a really, really, really mundane job but my coworkers were all interesting and I could spend my entire shift drunk or baked without trouble, though I rarely did so.
>>64229247
We? You're sure Blockbuster wasn't available in here? I got my first real internet in 2009, GVT 10 MB. Now i don't rent movies.
I'm from Mexico and bb still exists here.
>>64231970
It's changin'.
Named The B Store, now.
>>64221360
You think that's bad? I remember a time before Blockbuster. BEFORE BLOCKBUSTER. We also had a black and white TV when I was a kid, no VCR or cable.
Yeah, I'm old.
>>64223648
I can remember waiting on the phone with pen and pad in hand waiting to hear the show time for the movie I wanted to see.

I've been here since 2006. I see no reason to stop. It helps me keep in touch with youth culture and I've gotten countless good film recs.
>tfw your town never even had Blockbuster, just Global Video
>>64228800
lmao fuck off gramps 97 here
>>64233024
>I've been here since 2006. I see no reason to stop
>you will never have a magnet in your pocket while browsing too closely to the shelves at a video store
>you will never have nothing but TV-formatted movies to choose from while widescreen movies can only be found at specialty shops at high prices
>you will never have your VCR chew up the tape and put a permanent shit spot onto the movie
>you will never be in a video store at the same time as an argumentative redneck or black family are hootin' and hollerin' over which movie to see
And for the record fuck Blockbuster. They hung themselves.
>the way it used to be:
>movie rentals were for a week, and 2 days for new releases
>rent game for $5 for a week
>new game releases were 4 days
>if you were a couple of hours late, they didn't give a fuck
THEN they start having troubles due to online streaming services, so what do they do to compete?
>new movie and game releases were one-day only, and $10 each
>regular movie releases were for 3 days, and game rentals were for 4 days
>if you're late even by a few minutes, don't bother bringing it back. They auto-charge your bank account and like it or not you fucking own it and you paid full retail for a used game or movie
Pure retardation.

Hollywood video had the superior selection of just about everything. The best video store will always be "carbonated video". Rented every episode of robotch there, truely had a patrican animation section.
