As for non-weeb shit, try Ralph Bakshi stuff? "It's Such a Beautiful Day" is also a good movie.

If comfy is actually what you want, you're going to want to sit into some slice-of-life CGDCT like pic-related. Dunno about "patrician" but neither is ghibli so if pure comfy is what you're after, this is what you want.

Non Non Biyori is ultra-comfy CGDCT btw. It's just adorable little girls hanging out in a rural area. Think Totoro with more characters and longer and no magic big things.

I'm going to be objective about the argument you guys are having.

The United States produces faaaaaar more animated series and films than Japan. 98%< are aimed at audiences below the age of fourteen.

Japan produces faaaaar more animated shows and films than a vast majority of the world. A solid 25%< is aimed at audiences over the age of fourteen.

That is all of the information you really need. You are definitely going to see a large amount of Japanese animation when discussing animation in a non-children's setting.

Also, if you're going to bash Japanese animation, see if you can name more non-japanese animated series aimed at older audiences than I can name japanese ones. There are literally over fifty seinen series on my external.

America makes more animation than Japan. Japan produces more non-children's animation than America. It's that simple, sillies.

The sheer amount of seinen CGDCT alone vastly outweighs american animated adult comedy, and that's just one genre. However, America produces an imperial fuckton of chidren's cartoons, BTFOing nipland numbers-wise for animated stuff.

While children may enjoy animated things, it doesn't make animation just for them. teens enjoy live action teen dramas, does that make the entire genre of drama just for teens?

I mean, if you want to say stuff they show on Adult Swim is for children then I have no problem saying that Seinen and Josei is for children too(including all of the murder, sex, rape and gore).

Most kids don't have the attention span for a lot of the series I watch. That's why the weighted demographics in nipland for seinen are literally 14-34.

>>64215814
Movies are a song, series are an album, shorts are a noise. It might be a really beautiful, impressive noise, but it's still just a noise when compared to a song or album.
>>
>>64215768
It's really dependent on how the Japanese audience takes the show individually, really. K-ON was aimed at young adults but some sources cited more girls present at events, PreCure is aimed at little girls but young adults/adults love it, specially in the west, even accounting the new Netflix dub. One Piece audience grew up with the show, Ghibli films by Miyazaki are not considered anime by him, etc. Anime is for children though, but also for adults; pretty much for everyone who's interested.

>>64215961
more like 90,000+ counting Doujinshi, ero-manga, novels and software, considering they are also adapted. But I doubt the anime catalogue is bigger than the American one by a large margin. Considering American animation started way back in the day, anime should have surpassed it by now, sure, but it shouldn't be a huge difference as most people want it to be.

What's being produced now doesn't account for the sheer volume of what's been produced in the past. I am saying that there is literally more american animation than japanese animation out in the world, an a couple of minutes of googling will confirm this. Who knows, maybe the rest of the world will catch on to the superiority of anime within the next decade and we can finally talk about nipshit openly in public.

>>64216086
I'm really shocked at some of the stuff that doesn't get adapted. Think about how literally impossible it would be for something like this to fail as an animated series, even live action or film or anything of any kind:

Demographics are literal observations of who watches what. So I guess if 95% of the people who watch something are age 14-34 males, and that was also the intended audience, that makes that show a, children's show? Because you say it is, or something?

I'm not that guy, his argument is based on ignorance. Your example is on spot even if the range seems quite large, but considering adults are the only ones capable of acquire most of the merchandise of a given anime title, they end up being most of the audience of a popular title. Manga demographics are really unimportant in their own definition, they really don't define an actual range nor limit content unless it's WSJ.
>>
>>64215814

Yep, those kinds of shorts are usually an excuse for that kind of "hur, I'm so quirky" animation without and thing more interesting. The very best animated productions are long running series where they have the time to set up characters and story arcs.

There's just something deeply unsettling about the scene with the mother and the three giants.

Its a great film though, it reminds me a lot of Yellow Submarine but with actual meaning.
>>
Disney is actually really underrated. It's easily the most influential animation studio in the history.
>>

And it's not that good. There isn't a hell of a lot too it and what you get out of it will depend on how much you can relate to the protagonist. Its an unpretentious slice of life, for better or worse.

Now Pom Poko, that is the most overlooked Ghibli. Its one of, if not the most, complex and unconventional of their output.

Are there any animated series for adults that a non-weeb can enjoy?

Fantastic. Every frame is a complete work of art.

Mushishi is very good. It's very Japanese, but not in modern popcultural sense.

All he does is wallow in sentimentality and use cliches as a crutch, there's nothing interesting or well done about his direction or writing. His films are terrible.

Not him but I found Parprika to be its own thing.

Perfect Blue is supposed to be much better than Paprika in objective terms.
>>
>>64229040
no it isn't

>>64228983

I preferred Perfect Blue by a long mile, but they are quite different anyway so I can't really compare them. PB is way more "realistic" than Paprika.
