>BRUNI: It’s funny that you use the word “machine” for the latest “Star Wars,” because it did seem to me a carefully rigged, painstakingly wired delivery system for the highest dose imaginable of pharmaceutical-grade nostalgia. I experienced it as a pastiche of all of the most beloved themes, sequences, plot lines and visual tropes that appeared in one or more of the first three “Star Wars” movies.

>DOUTHAT: But “The Force Awakens” is, as you say, just a pastiche of … the original trilogy. And even that’s being a little kind, since it borrows only a couple of elements from “Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” and mostly hews so closely to the 1977 “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope” script that it’s almost just a straight remake or reboot.

>Where Lucas gave us all of cinematic history in a galaxy far, far away, in other words, Abrams has just given us a handsome, well-acted George Lucas fan film.

>DOUTHAT: I don’t object to people enjoying a Lucas fan film, or escaping into it! (Although you may be underestimating how much of Trump’s reality-TV showboating is likewise a form of escapism for his fans, a different way of escaping the Mos Eisley cantina of politics-as-usual.) But I do think it’s a little strange how fully movie critics embraced the hype, especially just a month after the “Hunger Games” saga — a genre pastiche whose originality puts Abrams’s flick to shame — wrapped up to more indifferent or dutiful reviews. Nostalgia is the real Force, it turns out.

>especially just a month after the “Hunger Games” saga — a genre pastiche whose originality puts Abrams’s flick to shame

I'm just going to assume this is a stab against Abrams and not a praise of the Hunger Games
>>
>>64211952
>Over use of technology and lack of good character stories
I disagree.

He didn't over use the technology he used it to better his story.

For example, we got to see the Galactic capital in all it's glory. A giant shining city that wouldn't have been possible 20 years ago to make. And it's really stunning but it's not the focus of the story. It's a part to show how good things were before Palpatine took over. Before Anakin fell. Before the rise of the Empire.
>>
>>64211841
The prequels failed because nobody challenged George and his unaltered vision splurged into the screen.
Just look at all the original ideas for the original trilogy and how studio intervention, technical limitations, and creative input from other people shapted George's original vision.
Imagine if Disney had taken Lucas's first drafts for the new trilogy and shaped it into something coherent and watchable. I would have rather have that than an average remake of Ep IV.

They had to though. People are shitting on the movie for having to basically mirror ANH but they'd shit on it harder if it went the PT route and just did something new. So they had to play the nostalgia card, or else people wouldn't have even watched it.

Now that they got the rehashing and bring back old cast done they can take a different direction for the next two of the trilogy.

Worst case senario the last two movies also play the nostalgia card and repeat the last two films of the OT.

Every scene on coruscant happens in a room with a couch and some chairs. They do fuck all with the admittedly badass setting except to use it as establishing shot, and an obnoxious extended action sequence in attack of the clones.

Hell, the special edition of jedi has a shot of coruscant celebrating the death of palpatine that looks just as good as anything in the prequels, and that was a solid 5 or 6 years before phantom menace even came out.

George wasn't waiting for technology to evolve, he was waiting for the returns to diminish on the thx re-release, and then the special editions, in theater, and then on home video. And the EU was starting to peter out sales wise, so it was time, business wise, to make new star wars.

>The latest Star Wars, writes Emilio Renzato, is “modeled on the sloppiest current action films derived from the world of video games. The only merit of J.J. Abrams’ film is to show, by contrast, how the direction of the previous films was elegant, balanced and above all appropriate,” he writes.

>Renzato went on to slam the films’ use of computer-generated imagery, calling it “the clumsiest and tackiest result you can obtain from computer graphics.” He also derided the villains Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader Snoke ineffectual, complaining that they both failed “most spectacularly” as representations of evil—a stinging rebuke from an entity engaged on a daily basis in spiritual warfare against the forces of evil

>L’Osservatore Romano is not new to going against the grain in its reviews of record-breaking Hollywood blockbusters. It slammed “Avatar” as “sentimental hokum.”

Why haven't you converted yet?
>>
>>64214154
Alright fine, for the sake of argument let's say you're right.

What happened on coruscant that has anything to do with the amazing screensaver you see out of windows, and in establishing shots? It's in service to boring conversations that do nothing to move the plot forward, or expand the characters.

It's a neat as fuck setting, but it could have been Dagobah or Starfleet HQ in San Francisco for all the interaction it has with the story.

All of which you can do with miniatures, composites, and a smoke machine.

You can like it, idgaf, I'm not going to try to change your opinion about star wars, but the excuse "he was waiting for the technology to unleash his vision" is naive at best.

>It's a neat as fuck setting, but it could have been Dagobah or Starfleet HQ in San Francisco for all the interaction it has with the story.
That's the point. He asks you to take this insane city world for granted. It's much more immersive to almost ignore it, because it shows that it's nothing out of the ordinary for the characters.
Unlike, say, Otah Gunga, where it was strange for the characters so we see a lot of cool shots on the approach and exit and see the characters appear suprised at the gooey enterance bubble and the vastness of the city.

What I originally replied to was the comment that "This would have been impossible 20 years ago." That's objectively false, especially for a special effect maven like Lucas.

My point about the setting being used exclusively as backdrop isn't to say that does against his directorial vision, but that the exact same effect could have been done with miniatures and composite shots to the same level of effectiveness as they were done in the prequels.

Do you feel me on that, dawg?

If you like the prequels you don't have to defend them to me, I stopped being mad about that shit years ago.

Here I go defending Lucas, but sometimes I think he just says things on the spot because he gets exited about new things.
He's said some funny shit over the years.
I love the man, but I think he just talks to talk sometimes.

He's a hollywood producer, if he wasn't skilled in the art of bullshit you would have never heard of him.

And honestly, I think that's what he does best. When he was first getting started he bemoaned the studio system, and how it was fucking over creative content. He makes American Graffiti and people notice him, he gets lucky with star wars, through luck or genius manages to retain the licensing rights for the Star Wars brand, starts collaborating with Stephen Spielberg, partly responsible for a second iconic franchise. Founded ILM, and THX, and Skywalker Sound, and Lucas Arts. Nigger had bookoo bucks and influence, it seems like it would have been a perfect opportunity to create a studio or production company that he would have wanted to work for.

The notion that the primary quality you judge a film by is its originality is fucking absurd. Not to compare the two in terms of quality, but we don't shit on Shakespeare because most of his work is comprised of remakes. Also, The Hunger Games is based on a book, The Force Awakens is an original script.
