Now Disney own Lucasfilm, will they finally release the original trilogy on blu-ray without all the shit Lucas put in it?
>>
>>64209255
"Oo-la-wang choo koo-chee-pa-tie tan-ga ris-pa ta ya lee oh
Yo, ahh, yal-lie"
What did he mean by this?
>>
>>64209255
Why bother? It wouldn't be canon.
>>
Unless Lucas somehow kept the rights to the unaltered trilogy I don't see why not. It would be just extra money for Disney.
>>
>>64209255
Fuck I hope so. John Landis tweeted that George said they were happening back in September, but there's been no news since and I wouldn't be surprised if he was bullshitting as a final act of contempt towards the fanbase.
>>
>>64209343

It's like poetry
>>
IIRC, 20th Century Fox owns the original films, not Disney, so it's not likely that there will be a re-release any time soon.

>>
>>64209380
This. Original trilogy is part of the EU / "Legends" now. Only CGI / Jar Jar is canon.

All to prevent Thrawn from existing / prevent quality from being enjoyed.
>>
>>64209494

Why the fuck not though

NEET money is just as good as regular money
>>
>>64209255
The despecialized edition were done well
But I don't know hwy the download was like 20GB
>>
>Implying that the vast majority of changes weren't completely legit and needed

I've watched both the despecialised editions and blu ray editions in the past few months, and the original editions are so dated and not in a good way, and with the exception of a few obvious blunders (ANH Mos Eisley) most of the changes are good, particularly Bespin and the space battle in ANH.
>>
>>64209499
The only really offensive additions are yub nub removal and that... thing added to jabbas throne room. Everything else is just kinda there and meh.
>>
This scene gave me ptsd
>>
>>64209499

>can't watch originals without skipping scenes or otherwise pretending they don't exist in my head

WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME LUCAS
>>

yub nub removal was the the only thing I liked about the altered edition
>>
>>64209549

>>

Good
>Updated effects. And by "updated effects" I don't mean "SHOVE A TON OF CGI SHIT INTO THE SCENE AND REPLACE HUNDREDS OF MAN HOURS OF MODELWORK WITH CGI, I mean the subtle stuff, like cleaning up the chromakey smear work, and VERY VERY SLIGHTLY correcting the mattes.

Bad
>Literally everything else.
>>
i was rewatching return of the jedi earlier and i noticed that the green girl doing a dance in front of jabba before he dumps her into his cellar, her right breast is visible for an instant

why didn't lucas fix this
>>
>>64209540
I assume because Fox doesn't want to release something that indirectly helps their competitors. It's like Marvel comics shitting up the X-Men franchise because another company owns the film rights.
>>
>>64209255
Actually they don't own the rights to the original trilogy. So we are still fucked.
>>
Making changes to old classic movies is just offensive period.
>>
>>64209640
I don't understand technology what does that mean?
>>
I have the theatrical cuts on dvd, so I've already got my fix. :3
>>
>>64209654

I genuinely do not believe anyone could prefer the space battle from the theatrical edition over the 97 VHS edition.

Even for muh nostalgia, which I bet is likely misplaced, considering that unless /tv/ posters mostly over 30 years old, they would have grown up on the 97 VHS edition like myself
>>

>>
Is the despecialized edition a totally accurate representation of the original film or do they keep things that can be "objectively" considered positive enhancements by most people like those soldiers at the end of episode 4 where they get medals?
>>
>>64209494
It's more complicated than that
Fox owns all rights (theatrical, home media etc.) for ANH in perpetuity
The other films' rights expire in 2020
But TV and digital rights for films apart from ANH are owned by Disney
Which is why all the films were released on digital this year by both Disney (5 films) and Fox (ANH)
>>
>>64209741
It's less about preference, and more authenticity. Some people just want the original editions, warts and all. It's like looking at your old highschool photos. Sure they're not perfect, but you wouldn't go back and clear your 15 year old acne up with photoshop, would you? It would defeat the purpose
>>
>>64209762
i believe to establish this mechanism to the viewer so we expect what's going to happen when he dumps luke into it later
>>
>>64209884

No they are pretty damn close to the originals, for better or worse.

Even down to a hair on the screen in one of the scenes
>>
>>64209884
Only thing they keep is improved image quality afaik.
>>
>>64209884
Even before the special edition, the movie got altered a couple times already. How far do you go in de-specializing?
>>
>>64209884
Nope, it's a "warts and all" conversion. If it was in the original film reels in 1977, it's in this, and if it's not, it's not.
>>
>>64209969
>How far do you go in de-specializing?

All the way back to how it originally premiered.
>>
>>64209919

Thats a fair comment, to clarify my position, I hadn't watched the films for about 5 years and downloaded the despecialised edition only to realise it wasn't the version I grew up watching (97 edition).

I guess its a case of what we originally saw. I personally feel that whilst a lot of changes are obviously shite, there are a few that feel necessary
>>

>>
>>64209940

lol really? which scene is it? i'm curious
>>
>>64209969
All the way back. They literally got a film reel from 1977 to compare with. They even went as far as to track down and implement the original fonts for the Lucasfilm logo and the "A long Time ago in a galaxy far far away" title card.

>>64210053
It's just Star Wars.

It's a lovely effort, and rather ridiculous that fans had to slavishly do this just to get a decent copy of Star Wars.
>>
>>64210065
The Yub Nub is pretty retarded, but I'm not comfortable replacing that with whatever the hell that was in Jabba's palace.

If we could get a "PROPER Special edition" where they literally just clean up a lot of the imperfections inherent in the special effects techniques of the time and make everything look good by modern standards, while still ditching all the extraneous unecessary stuff like all the new scenes, it'd be perfect I think.

Uncompressed anything is raw and unaltered as mentioned previously. Every frame or pixel or second of sound is present in the file as a unique entity.

Compression attempts to reduce the size of a file by removing information that is redundant. If there is a 100px patch of "green" in a picture (redundant), instead of having all those pixels individually represented it will encode it as "100x of green go here".

Compression can be lossy or lossless.

Lossy compression removes the information entirely (meaning you can't recreate the original video/picture/song)

Lossless compression represents the data statistically, as a "formula" which is still better than representing pixels/frames/seconds individually but means that the original can be reproduced.

Isnt the despecialized edition illegal? Havent the creators gotten in trouble? At the end of the day they are putting copywritten material available for download

It was added when the movie was released on VHS.

The original theatrical run was just STAR WARS.

There was no 'Episode IV' or 'A New Hope'.

>>
>>64210428

>>
>>64210475

>>
The original negatives have been permanntly altered with the special editions.
When Lucas decided to restore the film in the late 90's, and add the special changes they never made an internegative before fucking with the original negative.

its almost impossible to remove the changes, and get the original star wars back, some aspects were forever altered and no amount of rotooscope can bring them back
>>
>>64210428
It's a weird grey area.

Technically, because it's a version of Star Wars that doesn't, strictly speaking, exist, and because it was created as a new product out of elements from old product, it technically counts as a remix/re-edit, and is therefore protected under fair use.
Any lawyer worth his salt could probably argue against that in a heartbeat, but that's how things are working right now.

The people who made the despecialized edits are stressing hardCORE that anyone who downloads this also owns a legitimately purchased version of the movies, just to cover their asses.

>The opening crawl in the first Star Wars film is very different from Lucas' original intention. The original text, used in the rough cut he showed to friends and studio executives in February 1977, appears in the Marvel Comics adaptation of the film.[6] When originally released in May 1977, the first film was simply titled Star Wars, as 20th Century Fox forbade Lucas to use a subtitle because it could be confusing, since there had been no other Star Wars movies prior to 1977.[1][5] In addition, it was not certain if the film would be followed with a sequel. When The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980, the subtitle "THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" appeared as the first two lines of the opening crawl. To match its sequel's crawl, the subtitle "A NEW HOPE" was added for the film's theatrical re-release in April 1981.[7] The original version, without the subtitle, was not released again until the 2006 limited edition DVDs.

Kaminski points out that a duplication of the original negative—commonly printed for the sake of protection—doesn't seem to exist for Star Wars. Something better was created, though: separation masters. "These are special silver-based copies that do not fade, and in theory should be almost identical in quality to the original negative itself, so even if the negative was destroyed you still have a perfect copy (which is the point of making the separation master)." Duplicates from these prints were used to replace damaged sections of the negative during the restoration before the release of the Special Edition.

>It would be just extra money for Disney.
Here's how Disney will grub for money.

*If* they make the theatrical releases of the original three movies available, it'll only be as part of a bundle. This means, you'll have to buy the original release and special editions of the original three movies. *And* you'll also have to buy the prequels and maybe The Force Awakens.

And you'll be forced to buy it in a bundle that contains the Bluray, DVD, and "digital" editions of the movies.

Ignoring TFA, Disney will count that as 9 movies in 3 formats. Total cost will be something like $200.

I think many people only want the Bluray original theatrical releases of ANH and ESB and maybe RoTJ. That would normally be $30 or $45 assuming $15/movie.

The whole point is to have an exact replica of the original theatrical release, including all the flaws. It's a philosophical thing regarding the original crew's matte line, SFX, etc work so they purposely don't remove any of it. The only work that's been done has been cleaning film degradation and removing special edition shit.

There's another guy (can't remember the name) who's been slowly restoring/enhancing ANH for like a fucking decade. He has access to a bunch of copies of the film via friends at Lucasfilm, and supposedly they made some agreement with him that as long as he doesn't release it they won't sue him. So to troll people he puts out screenshots and short clips showing how incredibly good his restoration is, then reminds them that they'll never see it blah blah.

Possibly Disney and Fox could get it from him and just polish it up and release it, who knows.
