Well, Rey was dull because she was an invincible superwoman.
With Finn, Solo etc there is some degree of hazard.
Ripley from Alien was interesting because she was resourceful and at times scared. She tried to work with her dwindling team and when that failed she had to improvise and rely on a bit of luck. -Physically- she was about as capable as a healthy man given her stature, but that's just as an aside.
Rey OTOH was infallible. Always courageous.
