It's not hand protection at all. It's actually detrimental. An attack that would have otherwise missed completely gets caught by the "cross-guards" and is then guided into the hand.

There is actually a legit purpose for that. SEE, imagine an overhead attack. You need to put the sword over your head. In that position, most people would defend by placing their swords ABOVE THEIR HEAD IN A HORIZONTAL MANNER. At this point, you can either stike normally at the person OR activate your second jedi sword end and pierce their throat. The Horizontal defence won't work that way, so it's practical for that one move. In the past, some men had 2 handed axes with a spiked end for this same purpose
