In the 2d cartoon Dooku told Grievous that he needed surprise, fear, and intimidation when fighting the jedi. If he lacked any of those Grievous would lose. That made sense because if a Jedi was able to calmly focus enough then they could target Grievous, but otherwise he would overwhelm them quickly.
Also in the EU (rip) he had other enhancements such as legs that could magnetically anchor himself to the ground to counter-act forcepushing.

I actually like the idea and character of General Greivous
Strong general and fighter and was trained in lightsaber combat and not the spiritual element of the force. He makes up for having no magic by having more swords and having robot strength and being able to do movements impossible for a humanoid. The big Grievous mistake that no one talks about is that they didn't get a professional actor to perform his voice. The voice of Grievous is Matthew Wood, a Lucasfilm engineer. If you listen to the Grievous lines in III, they're totally stilted. The emphasis on words is all wrong, and it's totally unemotional. If they got an actual actor it would've been better, but hey, maybe not, even seasoned Shakespearean actors can't do anything with this material.
